Hello everyone,

We are currently planning the arrangement of our recessed lights—mainly in the shower area of our bathroom.

At the moment, our contract includes 4 recessed lights at our request, but this number can of course be increased or decreased anytime (1 recessed light for concrete ceiling = €70.00).

I have attached our bathroom on the upper floor.

Shower: the full depth to the "toilet wall" is 2.10 m (7 feet), with a width of 1.00 m (3 feet 3 inches). The wall towards the door will be built up three-quarters high, meaning the shower is not fully enclosed and may still get some light since the wall does not reach the ceiling. The toilet wall is half height and has glass above it, so light also comes in here. How many recessed lights would you install in the shower, and how would you arrange them? Are 4 recessed lights really necessary here?

I have also attached our kitchen on the ground floor.

We are planning to add 2 recessed lights above the breakfast bar, plus a normal ceiling light centered in the kitchen. Does this make sense or not? The kitchen is quite long, so we assume that 2 recessed lights above the bar area would improve the lighting.

We are also considering typical recessed lighting along the stairs—see the example image attached.

What do you think about that? Is the main contractor allowed to charge the €70.00 per recessed light here as well, or is it somehow cheaper to install wall-mounted lights? Does this make sense at all, or does anyone have experience with it? Or is it ultimately just a visual highlight that ends up costing a lot?

Otherwise, we are not planning any other recessed lights in the house.

We would appreciate brief feedback on our thoughts 🙂

Very nice little project. Definitely worth doing!
Regarding the price, the general contractor can basically set whatever they want ;-).
What exactly do you get for the 70€ (also applies to the ceiling spotlights)? @danixf already mentioned this. Installing the spotlight in the concrete ceiling is much easier.

One with a wide beam angle or two with a narrower beam.

As I said, we are getting: 4x Halox-P flush-mounted boxes at 65.00€ each (we told him: we want 4 spotlights in the bathroom 😀) – to be honest, we didn’t look into it in more detail afterward. How do I imagine this now? Do I still need to purchase the spotlight itself separately, as well as the light bulbs? Can I choose between quite different spotlight models?

The 65€ price is for the ceiling spotlights in the bathroom, meaning for the concrete ceiling. I don’t have a price for the wall spots yet... We just started thinking about that now.

Yep – unless you buy through your general contractor, who might have a limited selection.

I don’t want to be a downer, but is this written exactly like that in your contract?

Because you paid 65€ for the boxes, but everything else is uncertain.
The rest means light bulbs, connections, cables, drilling.
Basically, the electrician could roll the dice, and you either pay for it or end up with expensive boxes in the ceiling that can’t be used. Retrofitting the boxes to make them functional is practically impossible.

You generally don’t gain more safety through the lights at the stairs.

For our dog, the motion sensor provides both security and independence.

We are actually planning to install recessed lights only in the shower area! Surely 4 recessed lights would be too much there, right? We just don’t want the shower to feel like a dark hole.

Depending on the fixture you choose, both 4 or 2 recessed lights will provide sufficient lighting in the shower area. Which option looks better on the ceiling? What kind of shadowing would you (not) want while showering?
Look for fixtures with a wide beam angle and a diffuser lens, high CRI, and a rather warm color temperature; that tends to be quite pleasant in this area. How much light feels comfortable is something you need to determine yourself. When comparing, remember that lumens measure luminous flux and lux measures illuminance (brightness on a surface). I think about 60–70 lux arriving on the floor tile is a good starting point.

I can only recommend Dialux. It’s free, and with 1-2 YouTube videos you can easily calculate/simulate the light output, lumens, etc. That’s how I simulated the rooms where recessed lights are installed/were installed. For example, in the bathroom, this led me to a completely different layout/number than originally planned. It also allows you to simulate which beam angle works best.

We definitely need to discuss this in detail again with our general contractor—also about which spotlights can actually be installed. I assume it depends on the diameter of the flush-mounted box, right? I’m still not familiar with this topic at all...

What is definitely included are connections, cables, drilling, etc. I think in the end we will have to take care of the spotlight itself and the light bulbs.

For my understanding:

If I order 5 spotlights for €50 from a well-known online retailer, I only need the bulbs, correct?
Are those spotlights any good, or are they just “junk”?
I’d like to know what else we should expect after the boxes and wiring are installed.
