Who spends €15,000 on furniture???

We do – or at least close to that.

- New sofa €3,500
- New dining table €2,000
- 8 new dining chairs €3,200
- New box spring bed €1,500
and plenty of lamps, mirrors, etc.

I don’t find €15,000 that surprising now.
How much have you spent on new furniture?

Like it! It has become a classic for us with the DSW Eames. .

Do you have the version with the plastic shell?
I really like the design, but I don’t find it comfortable to sit on because the seat feels too cold. Our children use sheepskin covers on theirs.
In that respect, I also really like the version with upholstery!

Brief regards

Ours has a cushion on the seat shell, but not on the backrest.

We spent a lot of time choosing the right furniture and then obtaining the corresponding quotes. It was very exhausting – but it can save a lot of money.

1: Compile a selection (hard to compare because major furniture manufacturers, such as Wöstmann, sell the same item under different names).

2: Request offers for the same selection from 2 to 3 major furniture manufacturers and ask them to underbid each other. For us, these were: a large company with representatives in Bietigheim and Sindelfingen, a large company with representatives in Göppingen and Esslingen Sirnau, a Wohnland store from Reutlingen, and Europe’s largest furniture store from Senden. In the end, Sindelfingen and Senden were almost tied. On average, about 25% was discounted on the installation price (not the RRP). Anything not sold as part of the package is hardly available later at such conditions.

3: Good quality costs money… for example, E. Schillig was not at the same level for us as W. Schillig. Rolf Benz may look nice, but it was not comfortable for us.

4: For some furniture pieces, it’s also worth considering a visit to a cabinetmaker.

Have fun

What do you mean by selection???
Are you referring to everything being uniform, like a single design, similar to what you might find at a furniture store?

My wife and I occasionally browse through large furniture stores, like Kraft or Kabs up here. But we never really enjoy it. Somehow, it’s always the same uninspired, generic stuff. Thousands of corner sofa sets, each flashier than the last, uncomfortable to sit on and only good for lounging. Shelving units for the living room are almost non-existent; apparently, people who own more than three books are a dying tribe for furniture makers. Instead, there are ultra-wide media racks, designed to showcase the big-screen TV as the centerpiece—the highlight of the room. Hello, Frauke and Franz, welcome to our living room, look at what we have for the amazing television.

A beautifully crafted piece is rare; particleboard covered with laminate or other coatings dominates. “Selectable fronts” is just another way of saying pressed wood waste covered up a bit.

We often actually find what we want at Ikea. Yes, it’s often particleboard there too. But the designs are more delicate and sophisticated. Sofas are smaller. The dining table is really a table, not a ping-pong table. Chairs still carry on the Arne Jacobsen tradition—making a lot out of very little. Round shapes, plywood laminates. We like that. Take the Lack coffee table, for example. Only $10. Some coated wood composite filled with recycled paper. Square. Small. Buy four of them, even in different colors if you want. Put them close together, and you have a big table. Or at a small party, each couple gets one to place their drinks and snacks on. Want to dance? Bam, the little tables are quickly out of the way. Furniture comes from the word “mobile.” Somehow mainstream producers have forgotten this. Or maybe we customers always want more and more? Does it always have to be huge, with nothing but meal replacement shakes on the table? Karsten

For us, it was:

Lamps, coat rack, chairs, dining table, bar stools, bed, kids’ room furniture, wardrobe, sofa, and wall unit.

The manufacturers vary. Large furniture stores supply everything that is common.
