ᐅ Is a "Free TV" Connection Still Worth It?

Hi!
In our new build, there is a provision for a satellite system as well as multiple satellite outlets in every room. Now I’m wondering, is that really necessary? Will my children ever watch anything on free-to-air TV?
My children and I mainly watch Netflix/Amazon, and only my wife occasionally watches crime shows on free-to-air TV.

So my thought is to skip the whole satellite setup and instead install more LAN ports...

How have you handled this?

Interesting discussion! For us, the flat rate for the satellite connection was supposed to be 2,500 EUR (net)! That’s why we decided against it. The plan is to use Internet or possibly DVB-T2 later. Without a dish, there’s also no shading on the photovoltaic panels.

For us, the satellite flat rate cost 700 euros... I already thought that was expensive since the hardware itself costs almost nothing.
So, regarding the topic: in the living room, IP TV via LAN, and all other rooms with satellite connections, with a LAN socket installed next to each satellite connection.

Our satellite system is priced at around €1000 (approximately $1100), including roof tiles with mounting rods, the receiving dish, LNB, cabling, and outlets. At the moment, I’m not sure how many rooms will be covered or whether a multi-LNB or a multiswitch will be used; I still need to clarify that. (We are currently in the final stages of negotiation)

Variety of content: Even if you mainly use streaming services at the moment, free-to-air TV could become an option in the future, especially when the children are older and may be interested in certain programs or live events.

There is nothing that can't be streamed.

So that is not an argument in favor of a satellite dish.

I am a bit skeptical about a satellite system as well. I haven’t watched free-to-air TV for five years. But what bothers me is being dependent. I have planned a satellite connection in several rooms and had the cables installed in the attic. Eventually, when I feel like it, I would connect the satellite system myself. You can get a good satellite system for 200–400€ (€), and each satellite outlet costs 70€ (€) from the electrician. This way, the investment costs are limited, and you can become independent quickly and easily.

I’m currently considering getting rid of the cable connection – we don’t use it privately, the antenna is enough for public broadcasters, and the rest is Netflix.

By the way: don’t you think this thread already smells quite stale?
