Hi!
In our new build, there is a provision for a satellite system as well as multiple satellite outlets in every room. Now I’m wondering, is that really necessary? Will my children ever watch anything on free-to-air TV?
My children and I mainly watch Netflix/Amazon, and only my wife occasionally watches crime shows on free-to-air TV.

So my thought is to skip the whole satellite setup and instead install more LAN ports...

How have you handled this?

And the time when professional journalists provided analyses of such quality that were otherwise unavailable to the general public has been over for more than a decade.

There is little to add to that. Public broadcasters are state-controlled sources used to spread left-wing populism and to manipulate voters. I only mention the bashing of Trump and the AfD. There is no trace of facts.

Independent information can be found online, but it is not always easy.

Satellite TV is entertainment, nothing more.

(Emphasis mine)

Interesting. Being state-supporting doesn’t necessarily mean being left-wing. I would have actually argued the opposite. But we do agree on the poor quality.

Perhaps that’s actually a good thing. Less so in FAZ, but Spiegel, Bild, and the rest of the Springer press are probably more in that area...

But where does Generation Net get its information?

You already provide the answer yourself. The “net” offers much more variety than you could ever imagine with satellite TV.

This is systemic. Through television and print media, the spread of news and OPINIONS was controlled by a few. Private companies with lots of money and corresponding connections and environments on one side and government institutions on the other. It may have worked in the early years, but if you look at how, for example, SPIEGEL was founded and who was involved then and now, it becomes clear that these players increasingly shifted from opponents to partners. Whether opponents or partners, the group of opinion-makers and information distributors was significantly reduced. This is not the fault of television; it has always been like this. Only through the internet have more and more people gained the opportunity to share their opinions and other information beyond Springer, Gruner + Jahr, and ARD. Just as not everything on television is accurate, one should also not take everything spread on the internet at face value. It is much more important to engage critically with new sources but also to question old sources, such as the major print media or public broadcasters.

For you, I recommend starting your research on the ZDF’s website in the ZDF Mediathek. There you will find by far the best show on German TV: "Die Anstalt" — it is made by really smart people and not just Josef Joppe.

I see it differently. The quality of the information provided by online portals concerns me. While ARD and ZDF may have some bias, they do not lie.

What do you mean by an "online portal"? On the internet, I find both: fabricated conspiracy and esoteric nonsense, as well as information and analyses of striking clarity that you won’t find in mainstream media. When experts discuss or write about specialized topics, it quickly becomes apparent how superficial and biased traditional journalists can be.

You don’t really visit online portals anymore; instead, you create your own newsfeed from blogs and vlogs and attend expert presentations on YouTube—always with a critical mindset. Additionally, you review primary sources yourself if you want to thoroughly understand the subject.

So, do they just not know any better when they spread nonsense? Maybe… But then why should I use them?

Lying is a very flexible term in politics. For me, manipulating opinions instead of providing objective reporting falls under this category. That’s why people inform themselves online.
