Who spends €15,000 on furniture???

We do – or at least close to that.

- New sofa €3,500
- New dining table €2,000
- 8 new dining chairs €3,200
- New box spring bed €1,500
and plenty of lamps, mirrors, etc.

I don’t find €15,000 that surprising now.
How much have you spent on new furniture?

For example, spending more than 150 euros on a dining chair seems absolutely excessive to me.
Yes, that was my limit. However, based on reviews and my own experience, you can tell from the upholstery and fabric whether something is made with higher quality. The fabric in particular reveals the quality. Just like a 1000€ (about $1,100) laminate kitchen from Neckermann has a melamine coating, a brand-name company uses lacquered wooden fronts.
... and without children, you can also afford to focus more on quality and design. I’m a bit of a saver, but I still want a stylish piece in my home — I place a lot of value on appearance and comfortable living. It just has to fit. If there’s something really great, I’m willing to pay roughly 20% more. After all, I look at it every day. But everything has to be affordable based on your income.

@ypg Something must be wrong then 😉 You often give qualified answers here (in my opinion) and express yourself well. That qualifies you for more than just a low-wage job. Have you asked for a raise? :p Then maybe you can afford a Thonet once in a while.

Joker 😀 Unfortunately, the pay scales at the government office don’t offer much progress. I’ve been at my final salary step for 20 years and go on strike every two years for a small raise :p Among other things, my job is to write reports in a way that everyone can understand them 😉

I have already ended up with the Dutch suppliers...
During a trip in the Netherlands, we found what we were looking for at refri in Weert. Unfortunately, they are currently working hard on a new version of their website, so there is nothing to see there at the moment. One of the chairs is at one of our desks. It is very comfortable and stable despite its slender legs and casters. I don’t know the manufacturer. There are many upholstery options – we chose a non-animal fabric resembling suede or Alcantara and, besides red, also went with blue, green, mustard, and gray. We found €275 (about $300) fair for the quality. Since the chairs are made to order, you need to be patient for 6 weeks.

Office corner with a burgundy chair in front of a black desk, plant by the window.

Red armchair in front of a black cabinet, wall art, plant next to a glass wall.

Thank you. I have a similar (pink) one at my desk :p
99€ at Westwing. With yours, I’d be worried about cutting off circulation in my legs if I dangled them over the armrest 🙂
But it’s good to know that those slender legs are more stable than they look.

Your suggestions are great. When you search these stores/companies/designers on Google, more similar shops come up that are worth visiting.

I’m a bit frustrated: every year I face the same challenge of finding a unique piece for the house and replacing old furniture. Without the pandemic, my husband and I would visit the usual furniture stores to escape the uniform, generic selection. Then we check out specialty shops in Hamburg: small, boutique stores. Some more expensive, some cheaper. Meanwhile, we google around. One is bankrupt, another has moved or reopened somewhere new.
I hate keeping lists on my computer; I don’t like favorites. You hardly ever look at them again anyway.
So I’ve manually created a permanent list of "my" stores, and tomorrow, on my day off, I’ll visit them all again considering my increased budget.
I’d probably have an easier life if I went with the generic furniture store look where everything matches 😀

They have to be, since my weight is well above average. The greatest stress happens when rocking on the chairs, and with the casters underneath, that's not really advisable.

I guess life would be easier if I had that standardized furniture store look where everything matches.

That’s what makes the hunt especially enjoyable and the success rewarding. Just take some time – and if necessary, keep occupying the chairs until there’s room to move again.
