Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a BILLY shelf unit with doors. I followed the instructions very carefully, tightened all screws properly, and installed the doors. However, one of the doors sticks significantly, even though it appears to be correctly aligned. The door does not close properly, giving the impression that either the shelf unit or the door might be warped, although the frame is perfectly vertical.

My question is: What causes can still lead to a BILLY door sticking despite correct assembly? I would like to rule out common issues or check if certain assembly steps are particularly critical.

I look forward to your experiences, advice, or tips to solve this problem. Thank you in advance!

Hello lucas31,

First of all, it’s great that you followed the instructions carefully! Your question is very valid because often everything looks correct at first glance, yet the door still sticks. A common reason with BILLY doors is the fine adjustment of the hinges. These can be adjusted in multiple directions, and even a deviation of just one millimeter (0.04 inches) up or down can cause the door to rub somewhere.

Another reason is that some shelving units may tilt slightly due to an uneven floor. Even if the shelf itself is level, the door can stick. It’s definitely worth checking the shelf with a spirit level and, if necessary, adjusting the feet using small shims.

Lastly, you should check whether the hinges are properly seated in the drill holes and that all screws are tightened enough but not too tight, as overtightening can cause the hinges to warp slightly.

If you’re unsure about adjusting the hinges, I can gladly provide you with a brief guide. Good luck!

Hello lucas31,

I would like to explain in more detail why a BILLY door can stick even when installed correctly.

– that is absolutely correct. The BILLY hinges offer multiple adjustment options: horizontal, vertical, and depth.

What is often overlooked is that although the cabinet itself appears straight, the holes for the hinges may be slightly misaligned, especially with older or used furniture. Even minor manufacturing tolerances can cause the door to rub in certain spots.

Additionally, you should check if the door is flat at the top and bottom. Sometimes slight warping due to moisture can cause subtle distortions that are hardly visible but create pressure points.

The order of installation can also be important: if the hinges were only roughly fastened and the door is then fully closed, the screws will need to be readjusted. It helps to remove the door slightly and make the adjustments step by step.

One small question: does the door stick at the top edge, bottom edge, or on the side? This detail can indicate different causes, so it would be useful information for a more targeted troubleshooting.

Hello everyone,

Based on my experience, I would approach the topic "Why does a BILLY door stick despite correct installation?" systematically. Here is a brief guide:

1. Check the hinges: Are all screws loose or tight? Loose screws can prevent the door from aligning properly, while screws that are too tight can cause tension.

2. Door adjustment: The BILLY hinges are adjustable in three directions. Usually, only the lateral adjustment is made, but height and depth are often overlooked.

3. Shelf position and floor level: An uneven floor can cause the shelf unit to warp slightly. Make sure to check this with a good spirit level and adjust the feet accordingly.

4. Warped or damaged door: Check if the door is flat and straight. Warping is often only visible when viewed closely from the side.

In summary: Even if the installation steps were followed correctly, fine adjustments are essential. My recommendation: Remove the door, check all steps, and then start adjusting the hinges, paying close attention to all three adjustment directions.

If you like, I can provide a detailed guide for setting up the hinges.

That’s exactly what I wanted to say! 🙂 I received my new BILLY door and at first I thought I had done everything right, but then it stuck and jammed. After a few minutes of adjusting – wow, now the door runs super smoothly!

Lucas31, how is it for you? Sometimes just a few millimeters (inches) at one spot can cause it to jam!

You’ve got this! It’s worth sticking with it; the result is great when the door closes perfectly. Good luck! :-)
