ᐅ Why does my Billy bookcase squeak under load?

Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookshelf from Ikea that creaks under load, especially when I place several books on one shelf panel. The noises mostly occur when I slightly move the shelf or when the weight on the different shelves varies. I am curious about what exactly causes this creaking—whether it’s due to the material, the construction, or perhaps the joints. Could this also indicate excessive load, or is it more of a normal phenomenon? I have considered tightening the screws or maybe sanding or treating the shelves somehow. Do you know what might be causing this specifically?

The squeaking usually comes from small movements between the connections. Tightening the screws often helps. Otherwise, applying some lubricant at the contact points can reduce the noise.

Hello dennisbi, your Billy shelf squeaks under load because the individual components are made of particleboard and fiberboard, which rub against each other or move slightly when loaded or shifted. The squeaking often comes from friction at the joints, such as dowels or screws.

That's correct, and moisture can also play a role because the wood swells or shrinks. It's best to check if all screws are tightened properly. Occasionally, the shelves should not be overloaded, as this can slightly warp the structure and cause noises.

A light application of wax or silicone spray to the screws or connection points can help, as cecile65 has already suggested. For louder squeaking, you can also attach felt pads under the shelf legs if the shelf wobbles slightly.

I would like to add that the Billy shelf unit is designed for light to medium loads. If the shelves are overloaded, the material can easily bend, causing stress on the fastenings, which results in creaking sounds.

Both are actually possible: slight creaking is a normal phenomenon as the materials and connections respond to load. However, if the noise is very loud or new, you should check the load. Also, make sure the shelves are properly inserted, as incorrect assembly can also cause mechanical stress.

If the shelf is placed on an uneven floor, the entire structure may move, putting stress on all connections. Ensuring a stable base is therefore also worthwhile.

I had a similar problem and know how annoying a squeaky Billy shelf can be—especially when you read a lot or take things off it.

That actually made a noticeable difference for me, as the air got drier in winter and the noise became stronger.

It also helps not to overload the shelf and to check the screws regularly. Where the shelves rest, I placed felt pads to reduce friction—which significantly improved the quietness. Patience is important too, since small movements are inevitable in everyday use.

Hello, I would like to add another point: some users report that squeaking is worsened by minimal gaps between the shelf components. What can help is carefully tightening all screws, but without overtightening, as well as checking that the dowels are still firmly in place.

That is a very good tip. Sometimes small spacers made of felt, plastic, or foam rubber at critical points help to minimize metal-to-metal or wood-to-wood friction.

If you feel unsure about tightening, you can carefully take the shelf apart and thoroughly clean all parts, as dust and dirt in the joints can also cause noise. With longer use, a drop of lubricating oil on some contact points can be very helpful.

In general, you should always observe the load limits specified by the manufacturer.
