ᐅ Why do the shelves of the BILLY unit sometimes not fit perfectly?

Hello everyone, I have encountered an issue with the shelves of the Billy bookcase from IKEA. I noticed that the shelves do not fit precisely into the designated holes on some units. In some cases, they fit very tightly, in others rather loosely, or they have to be pushed in forcefully, which is uncomfortable and can damage the wood. I am wondering whether this is due to production inaccuracies, manufacturing tolerances, or perhaps material warping caused by moisture. Does anyone know the exact causes or have suggestions on how to install the shelves more easily without damaging them? Thanks in advance for any informed answers!

I can understand that – I was afraid of damaging the floors back then. What helped me was gently tapping with a rubber mallet; this sets the floors securely without having to force them out.

Also, I got the impression that different production batches had varying precision in the drill holes.

I am interested to know if you are really sure that the fit of the individual shelves is due to manufacturing tolerances. Could it not also be related to the assembly? I ask because I often notice that adjusting the side panels affects the alignment of the dowel holes. If the side panels are not 100% parallel, the shelves do not fit precisely.

That sounds very plausible! I’ve already noticed that the side panels sometimes aren’t perfectly perpendicular to each other. This could cause additional stress and reduce the fit quality. Does anyone have tips for an optimal assembly?

For installation, it is recommended to use a spirit level and to screw carefully. Do not tighten the side panels too much, as they can easily bend.

Hey, I like the image of a shelf that might resist a bit like a stubborn mule during assembly 😄. But seriously, sometimes not everything fits perfectly. Perhaps you could rub the shelf pins with some wax or candle wax before inserting them to help them slide in more smoothly?

At least that softened the annoying tricky part for me a bit 🙂

That’s an interesting tip, thank you! I hadn’t considered wax as a lubricant before. It seems like a neat solution, especially for very tight-fitting dowels, to avoid damaging the material. I’ll give it a try.
