Hello everyone, I am planning to set up BILLY shelves from IKEA in my home office. The issue is that the floor is not completely level – it has slight unevenness and small slopes that are visible to the naked eye.

My main question is: Can BILLY shelves be safely installed on uneven floors without compromising their stability or safety? What measures should I take, if any, to ensure safe use? Are adjustable feet or additional aids recommended or even necessary?

I have read that BILLY shelves should be secured to the wall, but I would still like to know the best way to deal with uneven floors. Thanks for any helpful tips!

The shelves can generally be placed on uneven floors, but you should always secure the shelves to the wall. For stability, small wooden wedges or plastic feet can be used to compensate for any unevenness.

Basically, BILLY shelves are designed for flat floors. Stability can be affected if they are placed directly on an uneven surface. Securing them to the wall is therefore essential to minimize the risk of tipping.

Additionally, using adjustable furniture glides or spacers to compensate for unevenness and stabilize the contact point is recommended. Before assembly, also check the vertical alignment with a spirit level. This helps prevent the shelves from standing crooked permanently and being subjected to stress.

I can fully agree with kieran’s point. BILLY shelves are not designed to stand on uneven floors without any adjustments. I personally had the problem that my floor was very uneven, so I used small wooden wedges to compensate for the irregularities.

It is important to securely fasten the shelves to the wall to prevent them from tipping over, even under uneven loads. If you don’t have adjustable feet, you can also try using felt pads to protect the floor from scratches. When in doubt, it’s worth investing some time in precise leveling, as it pays off.

I know exactly how frustrating it is when the floor is uneven and you feel uncertain whether everything is stable. I had my BILLY shelf on a slight slope like that, and at first I was really nervous about its stability.

I did that and also placed small shims under the feet. That gave me peace of mind because I was sure the shelf wouldn’t wobble or tip over. You can see that sometimes these little extras make a big difference in feeling safe. 🙂

Without wall mounting, the risk is too high. Use wedges or adjustable feet for leveling. If necessary, also apply tape to the feet to prevent slipping.
