Hello everyone, I have some Billy shelves from Ikea at home that I set up on a rather uneven floor. This causes the shelves to wobble slightly and not stand properly. Do you have any experience or tips on how to best level or stabilize Billy shelves on uneven floors? I am mainly looking for practical solutions that can be implemented without much effort or special tools. Thanks in advance!

Simply place washers or felt pads under the shelf feet. This is inexpensive and quick to do.

If the floor is very uneven, you can also use small wedges. They are easy to adjust and help stabilize the shelf.

To properly level Billy shelves on uneven floors, I recommend a multi-step approach: First, use a spirit level to identify the exact uneven spots. Often, attaching small rubber pads or felt gliders to the shelf feet helps to compensate for minor irregularities and prevent scratches. For larger height differences, wooden wedges cut to size can be placed between the floor and the shelf base. It is important to secure these wedges—using adhesive, for example—to prevent them from slipping. It is also advisable to stabilize the shelf by fixing it to the wall to prevent it from tipping over when standing up. What type of flooring do you have exactly? Laminate, tiles, or perhaps parquet? On very soft floors, the weight might also make it harder to keep wedges pressed down.

That sounds interesting, thank you! The floor is older tiled flooring with visible grout lines and small uneven spots, so it wobbles. You mean I should fix the wedges in place, otherwise they might slip, right? Can this be easily done with construction adhesive by myself? Are there other materials suitable for this? I don’t want to cause any damage to the floor.

Assembly adhesive is good when you want a firm hold. Alternatively, double-sided tapes also work. They can be removed without leaving residue and are strong enough if the wedges are not too small.
