ᐅ How do I assemble IKEA Metod cabinets with soft-close hinges and adjustable shelves?

Hello everyone! I am currently planning to build kitchen and storage cabinets using the Ikea Metod system and want to equip them with soft-close hinges as well as adjustable, variable shelves. My question is: What is the best way to assemble these cabinets to ensure the soft-close function works properly and the shelves remain stable and easy to adjust? Do you have any proven techniques or tips for the assembly process, for example regarding screws, drilling, hinge alignment, or other potential pitfalls? I am especially interested in whether additional components are needed to optimize the adjustability of the shelves and how the soft-close mechanism should be installed. I would greatly appreciate a detailed step-by-step explanation!

Thanks for all the information so far! From my last build, I know that adjusting the doors can feel like it takes forever and often requires several attempts. Farro, how is it going for you so far? Are there any points where you’re unsure, for example, about where and exactly how to install the soft-close mechanism? If you want, I can also share my experience on where I initially had difficulties.

The soft-close feature is usually integrated into the hinges – you can hear it click softly with a gentle push.

Thanks for the encouragement, that sounds doable! A quick question: Should I install the soft-close dampers right from the start, or is it better to add them later once the cabinet carcass is fully assembled?

There are three adjustment screws per hinge: the first adjusts the door up/down, the second forward/back, and the third sideways.

This detail helps me a lot, so I can fine-tune the alignment precisely—thank you.

If the hinges are not installed correctly or a side panel is not completely straight, the soft-close mechanism won’t work properly.

I will pay special attention to this, especially when aligning the cabinet carcass. So far, I haven’t fully understood the flexibility of the adjustable shelves: do you need special supports that fit with the pre-drilled holes, or are there different options available?

Regarding the installation timing of soft-close dampers: I recommend first fully assembling and roughly leveling the cabinet carcass. Then attach and align the doors with the hinges screwed on. After that, you can insert the soft-close components, as they usually snap into a recess in the hinge. This way, you avoid damage during assembly.

Concerning adjustable shelves: Ikea uses so-called shelf supports that fit into pre-drilled holes—these are sturdy enough and allow flexible height adjustment. Make sure all supports are positioned at the same height and the shelf rests evenly. If you need extra stability, there are suitable connecting elements available, but for normal weight, the standard supports are sufficient.

Soft-close dampers engage only at the end. Insert base brackets into the correct holes. Avoid excessive weight. Adjust doors using the adjustment screws.

At the latest, when the doors are attached! 🙂

The supplied shelf supports are usually sufficient; I have also securely fixed thicker boards with them. Important: Don’t mix up the distances—otherwise, it will wobble.

Oh, and Farro, if you like: A good trick is to insert the supports slightly angled, so the shelves sit really firmly!

I had my doubts too, but it’s really useful. You can place each support peg into any of the holes, however you like. Sometimes I’ve adjusted the shelves when I needed to fit a large appliance or needed more space underneath. Keep at it, the effort is worth it!
