Hello everyone,

I want to repaint my Ikea Besta furniture pieces because they show some signs of wear and the current look no longer fits. I am particularly interested in which types of paint work best for the Besta units if you want a long-lasting and durable finish. It is important to me that the paint adheres well to the melamine-coated surface and is also resistant to scratches and everyday wear.

Has anyone had experience with different types of paint such as acrylic paint, spray paint, or specialized furniture or synthetic resin paints in connection with Ikea Besta? Are there any tips regarding surface preparation, priming, or recommended products?

I look forward to your insights and experiences so I can make the right choice.

Water-based acrylic paints are ideal. They adhere well to melamine-coated surfaces and are durable. Thorough cleaning and light sanding before painting are important.

I often find the discussion about the "best" type of paint overrated. Sure, there are technical differences, but in the end, Ikea uses melamine-coated panels that you can’t simply treat like wood with a stain.

Why not just go for a high-quality 2K synthetic resin paint? Yes, it’s more demanding to apply (it’s called that for a reason), but the result is much more durable and lasts significantly longer than cheaper acrylic paint.

You just have to be willing to invest the effort. If you don’t want to, spray cans are an option, but then you compromise on durability.

Acrylic paints are not automatically the better choice, especially when it comes to long-term resistance.

In summary, when painting Ikea Besta furniture, the preparation and choice of the right product are crucial.

- The surface of the Besta furniture is melamine-coated, which results in poor adhesion for many types of paint.
- Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (around 240-320 grit) improves adhesion.
- Using a primer that is specifically designed for smooth, non-porous surfaces is recommended.
- Water-thin acrylic paints (water-based) offer a good balance between environmental friendliness, ease of application, and sufficient durability.
- For the highest durability requirements, two-component synthetic resin paints are best, as they provide high scratch resistance and long-lasting protection, but they require precise mixing ratios and good ventilation.
- Spray paints can be a good alternative for smaller areas but often have thinner layers, which means less protection.

It is also important to carefully follow all working steps and to strictly observe drying times in order to achieve a durable, high-quality result.
