Hello everyone, I am currently facing the task of dismantling my IKEA Platsa shelving unit and am looking for tools that can make this process easier.
Specifically, I am interested in recommendations for tools that are particularly suitable for loosening the connector fittings (such as the metal rings, dowels, and screw system) without damaging the material or making reassembly more difficult.
I have seen that some people prefer certain screwdrivers, pliers, or leverage tools, but I am unsure which ones actually reduce the effort and which are unnecessary or even potentially harmful.
Does anyone have experience with dismantling PLATSA and can share detailed insights on which tools have proven effective from personal use? Tips on techniques or procedures are also appreciated. Thanks in advance!

- A high-quality Phillips screwdriver PH2 to accurately loosen the connectors.
- A small flathead screwdriver as a lever tool for dowels and edges, to minimize damage.
- Optionally, a small locking pliers (grip pliers) for the gentle removal of stubborn dowels.
It is important to loosen the screws evenly and without using excessive force to avoid damaging the wood. The plastic connectors can often be carefully pried out with the flathead screwdriver.
Other tools, such as cordless drills, may be faster but carry the risk of stripping the screws and weakening the joint. Therefore, I consider manual tools to be the best choice in this case.

- Patience is key. I suggest not forcing the connector fittings but loosening them slowly and evenly.
- A screwdriver with a longer handle can help generate more torque with less effort.
- To make it easier, you can work on the connections from the inside if possible, to get better access to the screws.
- For particularly stubborn dowels, gently tapping them out with a small hammer can help, but try to protect the furniture as much as possible.
- Avoid using pliers, as they can deform the wood or fittings.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
