Hello everyone, I want to modify and adjust my Ikea Brimnes furniture a bit, but I’m not sure which tools are best for the job. Specifically, I need to loosen screws, possibly drill new holes, lightly work on surfaces, and if necessary, shorten or file some parts. I already have basic tools like screwdrivers and a hammer, but I’m missing more specialized tools and advice, especially since MDF material can be quite delicate. Does anyone have experience with Brimnes and can provide a clear list of the essential tools, including tips on how to handle them correctly? Any advice on what to definitely avoid would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!
For modifying Ikea BRIMNES furniture, I recommend using a combination of: - Cordless drill with Phillips and flathead bits (for assembly and disassembly) - Wood drill bits in the 5-8 mm (0.2-0.3 inch) range (depending on screw size) - Handsaw or jigsaw (for cutting) - Sandpaper with grit between 120 and 220 (for smoothing surfaces after processing) - File for fine work and rounding edges - Clamps to hold pieces in place during cutting
Important: MDF is prone to splintering, so drill slowly and keep cutting tools sharp. Always remove existing screws before drilling new holes.

Hey, great question! The BRIMNES series is mostly made of coated MDF, which requires a bit of care. That’s why I definitely recommend using a cordless drill with a torque limiter – you don’t want torn-out holes 😅.
For cutting: a fine-toothed jigsaw works really well. Cut slowly and smooth the edges afterward with fine sandpaper.
And if you want to change the surface, use fine sandpaper instead of coarse to avoid unsightly scratches. This way, you can turn it into a clean DIY project without getting into a conflict with IKEA as a home builder.

As an addition: When drilling new holes in MDF furniture, it is best if the cordless drill/driver has a depth stop, or you use drill stops to avoid drilling through the panels. Screws with wood thread should also be preferred to prevent tear-out.
For fixing small mistakes, a file and sanding block are efficient tools. Additionally, a spirit level and measuring tape are recommended for precise work.

This recommendation is correct, but I would like to add that you should also avoid applying too much torque when screwing. It is often underestimated how quickly the material can split or crack. Alternatively, it is worth pre-drilling a pilot hole with a thin drill bit before screwing in – however, this should not be too large in order to maintain the screw's grip.
Furthermore, I consider it important not to drill unnecessary holes, but to use the existing connection points whenever possible.
