I am planning to assemble my kitchen soon using the IKEA Metod system. Since I want to work as efficiently as possible and avoid having too many tools scattered around, I’m interested in which tools you find most useful during the assembly process.
Specifically, I would like to know:
- Which hand tools are truly essential for the assembly and installation?
- Do you use any special tools in addition to the assembly aids provided by IKEA?
- Based on your experience, do cordless drills, screwdrivers, or other tools offer advantages when assembling Metod cabinets?
I want to avoid buying unnecessary tools but also make sure nothing important is missing so the assembly goes as smoothly as possible. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

For me, a cordless drill with torque control and a Phillips screwdriver were the most important tools. When working with the hinges, quiet and precise screwing helped a lot.
Also, a spirit level to check the proper alignment of the wall cabinets later on is essential—this is often underestimated, but it saves a lot of frustration when everything hangs straight.
Sometimes I was unsure about where to place the wall plugs, so a small hammer is helpful as well. I understand how easy it is to feel overwhelmed—but once you have the basic tools, you feel much more confident.

Do you use any special tools in addition to the assembly aid provided by IKEA?I’m happy to explain in detail so you’re well prepared. The IKEA Metod system usually includes a Torx screwdriver or an Allen key, which is sufficient for most fastenings.
In addition, I recommend:
- A cordless drill with Torx and Phillips bits for faster work. It reduces physical effort and protects the screws.
- A spirit level for alignment, especially for the upper wall cabinets.
- A tape measure to ensure precise distances.
- A hammer for dowels.
If you don’t want professional tools, a sturdy screwdriver, tape measure, and spirit level are enough. However, a cordless drill is a real time and effort saver, especially if you’re installing many cabinets.
If you need help with specific components, just ask!
Hey everyone!
I recently assembled my first complete Metod kitchen – a really exciting experience! 🙂
For me, these tools were essential:
- Cordless drill (without torque control, I would have easily over-tightened many screws!)
- A Phillips screwdriver as a hand tool, for precise final tightening
- Spirit level to make sure the wall cabinets were mounted straight
- Hammer, especially for the wooden dowels
- Utility knife to remove packaging straps and protective films
Don’t be afraid of the assembly – with the right tools, it’s really fun and goes faster than expected. Good luck with your planning!

When it came to the hinges, screwing them in quietly and precisely was really helpful.

I want to avoid buying unnecessary tools, but at the same time, nothing important should be missing so that the assembly goes as smoothly as possible. Here is a brief summary of the most commonly used tools when assembling IKEA Metod kitchens, based on various user experiences and manual instructions:
- Cordless drill with suitable Torx and Phillips bits
- Standard Phillips screwdriver for fine adjustments
- Level for aligning the cabinets
- Tape measure to ensure correct positioning
- Hammer for dowels and light assembly tasks
- Utility knife for removing packaging
The set consisting of a cordless drill, screwdriver, and level basically forms the core equipment. Additional tools like a pipe wrench or power drill are not necessary, as IKEA provides pre-drilled holes and prefabricated fittings.
This saves time and effort.
