ᐅ Which replacement parts can be swapped out by yourself for the IKEA Brimnes?

Hello everyone, I have a quite specific question regarding the IKEA Brimnes furniture series: Which spare parts can be replaced on the Brimnes without having to discard the entire cabinet or piece of furniture? Specifically, I’m interested in fittings, drawer slides, back panels, doors, and possibly smaller wooden parts. I would like to know for which of these parts replacement is generally available and how the interchangeability is technically implemented – for example, whether you can simply undo screws or if some parts are glued. Additionally, I’m curious if anyone has experience with which parts tend to be more prone to damage and if there are any common issues or pitfalls when replacing parts. Thanks in advance!

Drawer slides come in various lengths, so be sure to measure carefully! Replace screws if they are old, rusty, or damaged. For edges, use hardening wood filler or edge profiles.

If you replace the drawer slides, are there differences between the Brimnes models that you need to watch out for? For example, different lengths or types of extension?

Definitely! There are at least three versions, depending on the age of your furniture piece. My advice: measure carefully before buying (length, type of extension – full extension or partial extension) and ideally bring the old slides with you.

And what about wear on the screws and fittings? Can you reuse them or is it better to use new fasteners right away?

I would generally replace screws, especially if they are rusty or have bent threads. New fasteners cost almost nothing and provide better stability.

One more detail: What about repairing chipped edges or damaged surfaces? IKEA often uses coated wood fiberboard for Brimnes. Can you work with standard repair products here?

Yes, you can use plastic or wood repair kits from a hardware store—try to match color and texture as closely as possible. It requires some care and skill, but it’s doable.

Spare parts can be ordered through the official IKEA customer service, preferably by providing the product number and purchase receipt.

That may be true, but experience shows that many parts are rarely or not listed at all, so improvisation is often necessary.

Additionally, Brimnes, as an affordable furniture line, is not designed to be very repair-friendly.

Therefore, I wonder if it might be more practical to consider compatible spare parts from the aftermarket instead of relying exclusively on IKEA.

Compatible third-party hardware often fits, drawer slides are usually standardized. It is more difficult with back panels or specially shaped wooden parts. It is better to reuse screws.

A few of my experiences: I once replaced the doors on a Brimnes dresser cabinet myself. The doors with fittings are attached with screws, and the replacement was quite easy.

The back panels were more of a challenge for me: thin and fragile, so you have to be very careful.

When it comes to repairing surfaces, a bit of sandpaper and a color-matched paint or film sticker can work wonders. This way, you can avoid buying parts if the damage is only superficial. 😊
