leoardaHello everyone, I am about to assemble the IKEA Platsa system and am wondering which screwdrivers or cordless drills are most suitable for this furniture. My requirements are that the tool should be compact, reliable, and have enough torque to tighten the various connections easily and securely. Are there any recommendations for models or technical features that are particularly advantageous? I am also interested in whether special angle attachments or bits might be needed and if anyone has experience with battery life or ease of use during longer assembly sessions. Thank you in advance for your support!
For selecting a suitable cordless screwdriver for assembling the IKEA PLATSA system, I recommend considering the following criteria:
- Voltage: 12 to 18 volts provides optimal power and flexibility.
- Torque settings: At least 15 levels plus a drilling mode for precise control.
- Portability: Compact and lightweight, as assembly often takes place in tight spaces.
- Battery: Lithium-ion to optimize weight and performance.
- Accessories: Phillips PH2 bits are standard; sometimes PH1 or specialty bits are needed for IKEA-specific screws. Right-angle attachments can help access confined areas but are not essential.
An ergonomic grip and an efficient battery change mechanism are also important to ensure comfortable use during longer tasks.

Hello leoarda, I completely understand that choosing the right cordless screwdriver is important to you. Especially with the PLATSA system, which involves many small and sometimes hard-to-reach connections, precise and ergonomic tools are a great advantage. From my own experience, I recommend choosing a model that, besides having a sufficiently strong battery, also features an LED work light – this is particularly helpful when working inside a cabinet. It is also practical if the screwdriver offers multiple torque settings, allowing you to adjust the screw tightening delicately according to the wood thickness. Right-angle screwdrivers are not essential, but they are beneficial when working in tight spaces. Two small tips: - Order a bit set with long bits to reach deep spots. - Choose a battery with a long runtime if you are assembling several modules.
I think the importance of high-powered screwdrivers for IKEA PLATSA is often overrated. Of course, you need a bit of power, but the assembly is so straightforward that any standard 10.8-volt cordless screwdriver will do. If in doubt: a cheaper model is good enough, since you really don’t need more than 18 volts. So why spend extra money on features you hardly ever use?

For IKEA PLATSA, a cordless screwdriver with at least 12 volts is sufficient.
To add to the previous points: If you expect longer assembly times or frequently build this type of furniture, you should pay attention to battery capacity and charging time. Models that come with two batteries significantly increase flexibility. I would also recommend not focusing solely on voltage but also on torque – a good screwdriver for furniture should provide at least around 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) of torque to ensure tight connections, even with firmer fittings. The bits used for IKEA furniture are usually PH2, but PH1 is also common, so having a small bit set with standard sizes is worthwhile. An electronic clutch prevents over-tightening, which protects both the wood and screws. Weight is also important, especially when working overhead or in awkward positions.
