Hello everyone, I am currently looking into IKEA PLATSA furniture and have a specific question where I hope to benefit from your experience and knowledge: Which wheels or casters of IKEA PLATSA furniture are especially durable and suitable for heavier loads? I am interested in both the material quality and the craftsmanship of the wheels, as I want to put PLATSA cabinets on casters and rely on long-term stability and safety. Are there differences in the wheels depending on the model, and do you have tips on which versions are particularly robust? Thank you in advance for your detailed assessments.

Hey Lekin58, that’s a very precise question! 😎 Unfortunately, the standard casters for PLATSA are designed mainly for light to medium loads – like simple cabinets that don’t need to be moved frequently. If you want to put heavier furniture on casters, I would recommend switching to replacement casters made of metal or with larger wheel diameters. The original PLATSA casters are usually made of plastic, which makes them less durable under heavy loads. So, if the cabinet is well filled and moved often, you should definitely consider more heavy-duty casters. Otherwise: rolling party with a maximum load of 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs)!

I would agree with meGreg, but I would add that IKEA usually does not provide technical load ratings for the PLATSA casters, which makes it more difficult to assess. It is important to check the maximum load capacity of each caster in the product datasheet. There are models with metal cores and rubber coatings that are more durable than those made entirely of plastic. Additionally, the method of attaching the casters to the furniture plays a role (no pun intended), as poorly secured casters tend to fail more quickly. Are there any experiences with the different attachment methods?

Regarding the question about especially durable IKEA PLATSA casters: The standard caster is actually rated for a maximum of about 15 kg (33 lbs) per caster, which is sufficient for smaller, partially loaded PLATSA units. Models with a metal core and double bearings increase the load capacity up to 25 kg (55 lbs). The floor grip and the material of the rolling surface are also important – hard plastic wheels are less slip-resistant and tend to wear out quickly. For heavy loads, it is recommended to purchase industrial-grade furniture casters, which are sold separately and often have a load capacity of 40 kg (88 lbs) or more per caster.

Here is a brief guide for anyone wanting to use PLATSA furniture on casters with higher load capacity:

- Step 1: Determine the maximum total load of the cabinet including its contents.
- Step 2: Divide the total load by the number of casters to define the required load capacity per caster.
- Step 3: Standard PLATSA casters are designed for about 15 kg (33 lbs). If the calculation exceeds this, obtain replacement casters made of metal or with rubber surfaces.
- Step 4: When replacing casters, ensure that the attachment method (for example, screws or a click system) is compatible with the furniture.

Common mistake: Buying casters only based on appearance without considering load capacity. This can cause damage to the furniture base and unstable movement.

The strongest PLATSA casters are those with a metal core and rubberized surface. They can bear more weight and roll more quietly. Plastic casters are fine for lightweight furniture, but for cabinets with a lot of contents, it’s better to choose the metal version.
