Over the past few days, I have been thoroughly exploring which versions of the Ikea PAX system offer the best clothing storage solutions. I am particularly interested in how the various modules – from different widths and heights to interior fittings such as drawers, shelves, or hanging rods – perform in practical use.
What matters to me is not only the total storage capacity but also the flexibility and everyday usability: How do you manage organization, different types of clothing (from shirts to pants to accessories), and access to frequently used items? Are there certain versions or combinations that work especially well for people with varying amounts and types of clothing?
I would also like to know what role the doors play in relation to storage space—such as mirrored doors or sliding doors—and whether investing in specific accessories is worthwhile.
I look forward to well-informed experiences, recommendations, and possibly insights into common mistakes or limitations of certain PAX variants.
Thank you in advance!

Hello,
for optimal clothing storage, I recommend classic PAX units with a width of 100 cm (40 inches) featuring two rows of clothing rails, combined with drawers for underwear and compartments for accessories. Sliding doors save space, mirrors are nice but not necessary. Accessories like shelves and clothes hangers are useful.

Sliding doors save space, mirrors are just nice to have but not necessary.I think that’s a bit of an oversimplification. A mirror can visually enlarge the room and is very helpful when getting dressed, especially if you have several PAX units lined up. Additionally, well-designed sliding doors can improve organization, particularly in small apartments. In my opinion, the practical benefits and the design should not be seen as opposing factors.
Regarding storage space: nobody needs fully enclosed walls to keep things organized. Open PAX with baskets and shelves can be a worthwhile alternative, especially if you like to see your clothing and enjoy rearranging it.
Good morning,
I would like to approach this topic in a more systematic way:
1. Dimensions of the PAX wardrobe options: The height is usually around 201 cm (79 inches), with widths of 50, 75, 100, and 150 cm (20, 30, 39, and 59 inches). For optimal storage space, it is best to use the full room height and choose at least 100 cm (39 inches) in width, as this allows for a more comfortable interior layout.
2. Interior fittings:
- Clothes rails at different heights for shirts and long trousers
- Drawers (pay attention to front and internal dimensions) for underwear, socks, and accessories
- Shelves for folded sweaters and t-shirts
- Pull-out baskets for shoes or accessories
3. Doors:
- Hinged doors provide better access to the entire wardrobe interior; sliding doors are gaining popularity in limited space situations.
- Mirror doors are convenient for dressing but require space in front of the wardrobe.
4. Accessories and extensions:
Using interior organizers, separate storage units, and lighting can greatly enhance functionality.
Summary:
- Choose a height of 236 cm (93 inches) if the room allows, for maximum storage capacity.
- Combine elements such as drawers, clothes rails at different heights, and shelves.
- Select doors based on available space and user preference.
I hope this guidance helps in making your decision.

A mirror can visually enlarge the room and is very helpful when getting dressedI completely agree, a mirror is essential for me and my daily routine, especially since I have relatively little space and no dedicated dressing area.
I combined PAX units with a width of 50 cm (20 inches) featuring open compartments, with a 100 cm (39 inches) wide section that has an interior organizer. This way, I can easily keep track of smaller items while also having enough space for hanging clothes.

Sliding doors are a good option when space is limitedThat's true, I have glass sliding doors that are nice and lightweight as well as practical. My advice: make sure to choose good quality so they operate smoothly over time.
One issue I still notice: when organizing inside the PAX, the dimensions must be carefully matched to your own clothing; otherwise, you lose storage space because things don’t fit optimally. Does anyone have tips on the best way to plan the internal fittings?
