ᐅ Which Ikea Pax configurations are suitable as wardrobe closets for the hallway?

Nule44Hello everyone,
I am currently setting up our new hallway and considering which IKEA Pax options would work best as a wardrobe cabinet in the hallway. My main requirements are enough storage space for coats, jackets, shoes, and maybe some accessories like scarves or gloves.
It is important that the cabinets don’t appear too bulky since the hallway is not very wide, about 150 cm (59 inches). Ideally, slimmer but taller options with practical, adjustable interior fittings would be best. Does anyone have experience with specific Pax widths or interior configurations that are particularly suitable for hallways?
I’m also interested in door types – are sliding doors advantageous for a hallway wardrobe, or are practical folding doors better?
I look forward to your tips and recommendations, including suggestions on materials and colors to ensure the cabinet remains easy to maintain and fits well with the entrance area.

Hello Nule44,
to answer your question specifically, I would like to first explain the different PAX options that are suitable as a wardrobe for the hallway. Basically, the PAX systems are ideal due to their modularity, allowing them to fit a wide range of room layouts.
For a narrow hallway about 150 cm (59 inches) wide, I recommend the following configurations:
- Width 50 cm (20 inches): The narrowest PAX frames are recommended because they take up little floor space. Combined with tall frames of 201 or 236 cm (79 or 93 inches) height, you make ideal use of the vertical space.
- Depth 35 cm (14 inches): This depth is often sufficient for hallways, as coats and jackets are not very deep. This creates more room to move.
- Doors: Sliding doors save space and are easy to open without obstructing the hallway. In contrast, hinged doors require more space to open. Folding doors can also work but are often less durable.
Interior fittings:
- Clothes rails at different heights for jackets and coats
- Shelves for accessories and compartments
- Drawer inserts for gloves or smaller items
Colors and materials: White or light-colored fronts create a cozy atmosphere and tend to visually enlarge the space. For easy maintenance, fronts with a smooth surface are recommended.
A quick question: What is the ceiling height in your hallway, and do you already have a clear idea or any restrictions regarding the door choice?
I hope this helps you for now!

Sliding doors are preferable when space is limited. For the interior fittings, always use rods and shelves. Shoes can be stored in boxes at the bottom.

reoleon475 Oct 2020 10:42I love my PAX wardrobe in the hallway! 😄 I have the 50 cm (20 inch) deep version with sliding doors, which saves a lot of space. Inside, I have two hanging rods at different heights – perfect for jackets and coats!
In my opinion, sliding doors are great! They open quietly and don’t cause any problems when the hallway is narrow. In summer, my shoes are stored in shoe boxes at the bottom, so everything stays neat.
Don’t hesitate – especially with PAX, you can customize it so much that it fits your hallway perfectly! 🙂

One last tip: If your hallway is a bit darker, a PAX option with a mirror on the door can visually enlarge the space while adding functionality.
