FUBEBLAHello everyone,
I am currently planning a wardrobe from Ikea’s Pax series and wonder which models in this range typically come with sliding doors and which come with hinged doors.
My main questions:
- Are there clear model differences that determine whether a Pax combination uses sliding or hinged doors?
- If yes, which specific versions (e.g., widths, heights, or design options) are available with sliding doors or hinged doors, respectively?
- Additionally, I am interested in whether the sliding door models have any technical limitations regarding features or functionality that should be considered, such as interior layout, installation options, or particular requirements for the sliding door tracks.
I want to avoid buying blindly and only realizing afterward that I got the wrong doors. Thanks for your experiences and insights!

Hello FUBEBLA,
Regarding your question: The Ikea Pax system actually offers various types of doors that vary depending on the model and combination. Basically, the standard doors are hinged doors available in different designs and finishes, which fit the dimensions of the individual Pax frames.
Sliding doors are sold separately as their own variants, specifically designed for the Pax series units. They are usually found in wider frames since they run on tracks and therefore require space that is often compatible with a frame depth of about 58 cm (23 inches).
Important points:
- Hinged doors are available in almost all sizes, from narrow to wide.
- Sliding doors are often only available for widths of 100 cm (39 inches) and above, and less commonly for narrow units.
- Interior fittings such as shelves or drawers are similar for both door types, but sliding doors require attaching the sliding tracks, which involves some installation tips.
Overall, you can choose the doors modularly, but with sliding doors you need to pay attention to frame depth compatibility and make sure to purchase the appropriate track sets. I hope this helps you!

For the Pax series, there are basically two types of doors: the classic hinged doors and the sliding doors, which come under various model names. The standard hinged doors are available in widths ranging from 40 cm to 100 cm (16 to 39 inches), with classic heights of 201 cm and 236 cm (79 and 93 inches) being most commonly used.
Sliding doors, on the other hand, are only available for the 58 cm (23 inches) deep frames, and their width options are more limited than those of hinged doors, typically ranging from 100 cm to 150 cm (39 to 59 inches) total width composed of two or more sliding door panels.
Important points:
- Sliding doors require fixed top and bottom tracks. Installation is more complex because both tracks need to be precisely aligned to ensure smooth sliding.
- Sliding doors offer less flexibility when opening, as only one panel can be slid aside at a time. However, the interior space is not restricted as long as the frame maintains the standard depth of 58 cm (23 inches).
If you are planning the Pax storage systems, it is advisable to consider the combination of interior organization and door type from the outset.
My question to you: Are you primarily looking to save space or to improve easier access to the interior of the closet? This can also influence the choice of door types.
Sliding doors for Pax are only available for the 58cm (23 inch) deep models and from a certain width upwards.
Hinged doors are available for all models and are easier to install.
If you want to save space in front of the wardrobe, sliding doors are the better choice.
The interior fittings remain the same for both door types.
