Hello everyone,
I am currently considering outfitting my walk-in closet with an Ikea PAX system. It is especially important to me to choose models that are sturdy and durable, as I want the furniture to remain stable and functional even after many years.
I am particularly interested in which PAX models, based on your experience, are especially resistant to daily use and also hold up well against warping or wear on hinges, drawers, and doors. Are there versions with reinforced materials or special construction features that have proven reliable in everyday use?
The durability of accessories like interior drawers or pull-outs is also important to me because I plan to store items there that are handled frequently.
Who can offer genuinely reliable recommendations from practical experience, possibly with advice on proper care or installation to help ensure longevity?
Thank you in advance for your tips and feedback!

Hello Erica,
I completely understand your question, as the PAX series offers many options, but not all are equally durable under load.
Regarding stability and longevity, the models with thicker side panels are especially recommended. The classic PAX frames with 50 mm (2 inch) deep sides tend to be more robust than the shallower versions. Reinforced MDF back panels also help keep the wardrobe stable and prevent shifting or warping.
In my own home, I use a model with the larger frame profiles and glass fronts. The high-quality hinges hold up well as long as the doors aren’t loaded too heavily. For the drawers, it’s advisable to choose metal runners with soft-close functionality, as they show less wear compared to the cheaper plastic options.
For assembly, I recommend working carefully and following the instructions precisely. Inaccuracies when screwing can affect stability over time. When the carcasses are properly aligned and well secured, they can easily withstand strong pulling or loading.
In short: for extra durability, I would opt for thick side panels, reinforced back panels, and metal fittings. Accessories like internal drawers should be metal to maximize lifespan.
I hope this helps!

Hey Erica,
I find this topic really interesting! I have been a big fan of my PAX system for years, and I can definitely recommend not limiting yourself to the standard models. Especially the PAX versions with reinforced side panels and sturdy shelves offer incredible durability.
I completely agree with that, because I once faced a small challenge during assembly, but with some patience and precise work, my wardrobe became really stable. Also, the drawers with metal runners are great—I have been using them for 3 years, and they still work perfectly!
If you need a lot of storage space for heavy items, definitely invest in stronger side panels and reinforced back panels—that really makes a big difference!
Good luck with your project, you’ll do great! The system is a lot of fun once it’s all set up 🙂

I would like to add a few points that are relevant when considering the durability and longevity of the PAX system.
Apart from the technical specifications of the individual models, the following aspects play a crucial role:
- Material quality of the side panels: The commonly used 50 mm (2 inches) thick frames are genuinely more robust than the narrower 35 mm (1.4 inches) versions, especially for wider cabinet dimensions.
- Back panel: A sturdy MDF back panel prevents warping and provides the necessary lateral stability.
- Fittings: Metal fittings with high-quality metal runners should be preferred.
- Doors: Glass or coated doors are somewhat more prone to scratching but are mechanically more stable than plain particleboard doors.
Based on my research, the combination of a "PAX carcass with 50 mm (2 inches) frame and full metal-extension runners" is the best choice for everyday use.
Additionally, I recommend:
- Securing the cabinets to the wall using anchors and wall plugs to prevent wobbling.
- Ensuring careful assembly, especially with drawer runners, as incorrect installation can quickly cause premature wear.
With PAX, this mainly depends on the frame thickness of the carcass and the type of runners used.
That said, Ikea furniture is always a compromise between price and quality. For very high loads or extended durability, alternative furniture systems might be worth considering, but for everyday use, PAX reliably serves its purpose when chosen and assembled carefully.
I hope this gives you a solid basis.

Gibt es vielleicht Varianten mit verstärktem Material oder besonderen Konstruktionsmerkmalen
