Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of assembling an Ikea Pax wardrobe entirely on my own. Since the piece of furniture is quite large and has many individual parts, I’m wondering if anyone has tips or tricks that make the assembly easier without additional help? I am interested in practical tools as well as strategic approaches to manage tasks like connecting the carcass components or hanging the doors as effectively as possible alone. Are there any special techniques for organizing the space or parts, assembly sequence, or experiences with types of connections that I should know about? Thank you very much for any help!
Hello SIGAU, your concern is quite understandable, and I can offer you some practical tips that can really help when assembling the PAX on your own. First, it is important to prepare the space well—make sure to allow enough room, unpack all parts, and sort them by type (side panels, shelves, back panel, etc.). This way, you can avoid wasting time searching for pieces.
I also recommend reading the instructions carefully step by step and completing each assembly phase fully before moving on to the next. For the larger, sturdier parts that are usually handled by two people, you could use clamps or straps, for example, to hold them in position.
By the way, there are small tools available to help with hanging the doors temporarily, so you can have both hands free. If you like, I can explain these tools to you in detail.

In addition to marix’s advice, I recommend a systematic approach: - Start with the foundation slab and gradually build up the main structure by attaching the side walls to the foundation slab. Use long screwdrivers or cordless drills with bit extensions to work more easily on your own. - Avoid unstable intermediate stages by using temporary fastenings, such as clamps or clamping strips. - When installing sliding or hinged doors, a stable surface helps; you can place the doors on support wood and prepare the hinges before hanging them on the structure. - If possible, keep the instructions as a PDF on a tablet or smartphone handy so you can refer to them anytime. This makes it easier to check references. Precise organization and good lighting are at least as important as having helpers.

Do you have examples of how they can be used specifically? I am also considering whether I need to purchase additional tools but want to avoid major expenses. Which tools are essential and which are rather unnecessary when assembling PAX alone? The back panel seems particularly critical since it needs to provide structural tension.
Great question, and it’s nice to see that quite a few valuable tips have already been gathered here. I would like to go into more detail about potential pitfalls, especially if you plan to assemble the PAX wardrobe on your own. The order of assembly is crucial because the carcass can hardly be adjusted once it is fully screwed together.
Step-by-step tips:
- First, assemble the base panel and secure it firmly to the floor, ideally on a soft surface to prevent damage.
- Align the side panels precisely using the dowels and fasten them with screws. A helper or clamps can hold the panel in place, but if you’re working alone, be sure to use strong clamps that can be adjusted to the furniture dimensions.
- Take your time with the back panel, as it provides stability for the entire carcass. It needs to fit with millimeter accuracy, so it’s best to install it before fully tightening the side panels to build tension in the frame.
- When hanging the doors, a small stool or table can be very helpful to raise the doors to the correct height and make installation easier.
Always use a cordless drill with a torque limiter to avoid over-tightening screws. And when in doubt, double-check each step before fully assembling the furniture.

Hey SIGAU, I also assembled my PAX on my own and was really unsure at first if it would work! But it went great. Very important: don’t rush and take it step by step – just complete each building stage thoroughly.
Take your time, and if you ever have doubts, take a short break! And regarding the doors – I prepared them on the floor first and then used books as support to raise them to the right height. That way, my hands were free to attach the hinges. It really saves you a lot of frustration!!!
You’ve got this!!!
