Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my wardrobe and have decided to use the Ikea PAX system. Now I am wondering which of the PAX doors are the most durable for everyday use. Specifically, I mean:

- Which types of doors resist scratches and impact damage best?
- Are there differences in materials (e.g., solid wood, MDF, glass, plastic) regarding durability?
- How about maintenance and sensitivity?

I want to avoid seeing dents or marks after only a short period, even with normal use. Maybe someone here has experience with the different PAX door types and can recommend particularly sturdy options.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hello Filapin,

I can give you some structure here because I have the PAX system myself and have examined different versions at friends' houses.

Basically, there are the following door types for PAX:
- Painted wooden doors (e.g., white, dark brown, brown)
- Doors with glass panels or mirrors
- Doors with frame and panel (e.g., MDF or particleboard)
- Doors made of plastic or melamine-coated

Regarding durability:

- Painted wooden doors: The surface is relatively sturdy, but scratches can be visible, especially on dark colors.
- Glass/mirror doors: Highly scratch-resistant but prone to breaking from strong impacts.
- MDF doors: Very stable, impact-resistant, but sensitive to moisture.
- Plastic-coated doors: More resistant to scratches and easy to clean.

What is often overlooked is the load capacity of the hinges in relation to the door thickness. Thicker doors tend to be more stable and less prone to warping.

My advice: If you want a durable, scratch-resistant door for everyday use, melamine-coated doors are ideal. Glass is more of a visual highlight rather than suitable for rough use.

Hope this helps!

I find the whole discussion about 'durable PAX doors' somewhat overrated. Of course, wood and MDF can get scratched, glass can break – that's true for any piece of furniture.

Exactly, glass may be scratch-resistant, but a small accident can quickly become a major problem. Besides, all these scratches or dents on doors are hardly noticeable unless you constantly inspect the wardrobe up close.

For my taste, it is much more important how the doors perform mechanically: smooth operation, well adjusted, and above all, adjustable. Scratch resistance seems more like a marketing point to me. Most people buy PAX because of the storage space and flexibility, not because of the door.

The facts about the PAX doors are as follows:

1. Material Selection
- Melamine-coated particle boards are highly resistant to scratches and moisture but are vulnerable to heavy impacts.
- Painted MDF doors are visually appealing but significantly more prone to scratches and require careful maintenance.
- Glass fronts (tempered safety glass) are scratch-resistant but, as mentioned, fragile when it comes to impacts and shocks.

2. Quality of Workmanship
- The stability of the doors also depends on the gluing and frame construction. Solid wood frames with central panels significantly increase robustness.

3. Maintenance Instructions
- Melamine and plastic surfaces tolerate damp wipes well.
- Painted surfaces require special cleaning agents and are susceptible to stains.

Summary: For a durable, robust everyday product, melamine-coated doors are the best choice. Glass is only suitable if handled with extra care.

Melamine-coated doors are the most scratch-resistant.

Glass is scratch-resistant but breaks easily.

Painted MDF doors are more sensitive.

I understand that, but my question is how durable the surface finishes are. The smooth operation of the doors is usually well solved in Ikea PAX due to the hinges; my focus is more on whether the paint or coating holds up in everyday use.

Could you specify which Ikea door models actually have this melamine coating? I can’t find any that are clearly identified, as many are only described as “foil-covered” or “painted.”

I’m looking for a clear recommendation because I place high value on ease of maintenance and scratch resistance.
