Hello everyone!

I am currently planning to redesign my Ikea Pax wardrobe and am considering which of the different doors are easiest to clean. In households with children or pets, the maintenance effort is quite important. My question is: Based on your experience, which Ikea Pax doors are particularly low-maintenance and simple to clean, without needing special cleaning products or a lot of time?

I am also interested in differences in materials, surface finishes, and whether any special coating might help make cleaning easier. Who can share their experiences or maybe even offer tips on which doors to avoid if easy maintenance is my top priority?

The question is well posed, but I would further clarify how you intend to clean them. Do you mean simple dust removal, or also stubborn fingerprints, grease stains, etc.?

In general, Ikea doors with smooth lacquered surfaces are the easiest to care for, as dirt can usually be wiped away completely with a damp cloth. In contrast, doors with textured surfaces (such as wood grain or matte-milled finishes) can be problematic because dirt may get into the grooves.

What I often notice during cleaning: High-gloss doors show spots quickly, but they are very easy to wipe off. Patience is more necessary with real veneer doors or doors covered with foil – you should be more careful with cleaning agents there, as the surface can be damaged.

So: Smooth, lacquered surfaces are generally the simplest to maintain – however, customer feedback or testing before purchase is still recommended.

Brief and to the point:

- High-gloss doors (white or colored) are best cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner.
- Doors with laminate (especially matte finishes) tend to attract more dirt and are harder to keep clean.
- Painted doors (white, smooth surface) are durable and very easy to maintain.

Avoid doors with many decorative details or engraved patterns.

Honestly, that’s a bit too generalizing. Sometimes, the intentionally "harder to clean" look can actually be a significant style factor.

But back to the point: a quick reality check. High-gloss finishes? Sure, they look cool, but come with two issues – fingerprints everywhere, and over time, aggressive cleaners can damage the surface. So, if you prefer a minimalist look, it’s better to go for painted white or even laminate finishes, which may not be as reflective but can be more durable.

If you have a choice, you should weigh the visual effect against the effort required for maintenance – sometimes frequent cleaning means sacrificing style and character.

I would like to offer a somewhat more detailed perspective here:

- Painted fronts, especially in white or light colors, are best cleaned with a damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap. They are resistant to water and most household cleaners.

- High-gloss fronts, often made of coated MDF, have a smooth, non-porous surface that generally makes cleaning easier. However, abrasive or aggressive cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage the gloss.

- Doors with foil coatings are usually quite water-resistant, but can be damaged by inappropriate cleaning agents. I recommend avoiding solvents or alcohol-based products for these surfaces.

- Glass doors are generally easy to clean, though it is important to use suitable glass cleaners that do not leave streaks.

My advice: Before purchasing, always clarify the exact material and study the care instructions provided by Ikea, as the surface characteristics are crucial for ease of cleaning.

That exactly matches my experience.

What I would like to add: with high-gloss finishes, you should also pay attention to the edges. They can be less durable because the material is thinner there. I also avoid using abrasive sponges or scrapers on high-gloss doors.

Does anyone have experience with the PAX doors with mirrors, especially in everyday use?

Are the mirrors sealed on the front, or should they be cleaned more carefully regarding simple suction and wiping methods?
