Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my new kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and facing the challenge of choosing suitable drawers that can also hold heavy pans. Some of my pans are cast iron and quite heavy, so stability and load capacity are crucial for me.
I have noticed that there are different Metod drawer models with various bottoms and runners. I am especially interested in the load capacity, resistance to bending under heavy loads, and functionality when the drawers are fully loaded.
My question is: Which IKEA Metod drawers (e.g., METOD drawers with full extension, Maximera soft-close, etc.) are best suited to store heavy pans safely and conveniently, without damaging or bending the drawer or its bottom?
I look forward to sharing experiences and getting first-hand recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Hello Funa68,
your consideration is very important because heavy pans can quickly cause problems with unsuitable drawers. In IKEA METOD kitchens, there are mainly two common types of drawers to consider:
- MAXIMERA full-extension drawers with metal sides
- METOD drawer with full extension and wooden bottom
For your application, the MAXIMERA full-extension drawers with metal sides are the better choice. They offer a higher load capacity (approximately 13-15 kg per drawer) and are more resistant to bending due to their metal frame. Although the bottoms are thinner than wooden ones, the metal frame ensures good load distribution.
Wooden bottoms are more visually appealing and appear sturdier but often have less load capacity than those with metal sides, especially when heavily loaded. For heavy cast iron pans in particular, I would also recommend not filling the drawers completely but rather considering them as part of the overall system.
The soft-close mechanism reduces the risk of damage from slamming but is not a main factor for load capacity itself.
Summary:
- MAXIMERA full-extension drawers with metal frames offer the best combination of stability and load capacity for heavy pans.
- Ensure proper installation (correct anchors, secure fastening of cabinets).
- Avoid excessive overloading even there.
I hope this helps you further.

Additionally, it should be noted that the load capacity also depends significantly on the drawer width. Wider drawers tend to bend more easily if the load is not evenly distributed.
I also recommend paying attention to the maximum load specified in the IKEA product datasheet. The 13-15 kg serves as a guideline, but it may be useful to place a simple board under a heavy pan to better distribute the pressure on the drawer.
Furthermore, you might consider using IKEA’s heavy-duty slide (if available), which can handle even higher loads. However, this often is designed only for specific cabinet widths.
In summary:
- MAXIMERA with metal sides
- Avoid concentrating the load in one spot
- Reinforce the interior lining if needed
- Check alternative heavy-duty slides
Important: It is always advisable to carefully compare the dimensions and load capacities before purchase.

They are more durable and stable.
Drawers with wooden bottoms are less load-bearing.
