Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes shelves and plan to customize and enhance them using DIY techniques. However, I noticed there are many different methods, ranging from paints and stains to adding moldings, applying adhesive films, or even altering the structure of the shelves. Therefore, I am curious: Which DIY techniques work best on IKEA Hemnes shelves in terms of both durability and visual effect? Are there any methods that are particularly recommended because they adhere well to the typical material of Hemnes shelves or are especially easy to implement? And what mistakes should be avoided?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello Justindi!

I think your question is great because Hemnes shelves are so versatile! 🎉 I’ve already completed several projects with them. Sanding followed by staining or painting with acrylic paint works especially well! It gives the wood surfaces a completely new character and lasts a long time if you seal it in between with clear varnish.

A little tip: Be careful not to sand too deep, otherwise the particleboard underneath will show – which doesn’t look good at all! So it’s better to use fine-grit sandpaper and apply several thin layers.

Keep it up, DIY is really fun!

Hello Justindi,

To answer your question in more detail, here are some insights from many years of experience with Hemnes shelves:

The material used in Hemnes is mainly solid wood, usually pine, which is versatile with different techniques but can be sensitive to moisture.

If you plan to paint or stain the shelves, I recommend the following steps:
- Carefully sand with 120-150 grit sandpaper to roughen the surface without damaging the wood grain
- Use wood stain or a wood primer to ensure even color absorption
- For the final coat, acrylic or water-based acrylic lacquer is especially suitable, as it adheres well to solid wood

When applying adhesive films, I suggest lightly sanding the surface beforehand with fine sandpaper to improve adhesion – applying the film without sanding risks it peeling off quickly.

A common mistake is insufficient surface preparation or applying paint while the wood is too wet – this causes uneven absorption and wood swelling.

Also, be cautious with moisture introduced through lacquering techniques, as pine wood is very hygroscopic.

If you are planning to modify the shelves (e.g., replacing doors or adding paneling), more information about your goals would help provide more precise advice.

What exactly do you have in mind?

Thank you, lorena, for the very detailed explanation! At the moment, I don’t have any specific renovation plans; I mainly want to improve the appearance and maybe make the shelves a bit sturdier. The idea is to make the Hemnes shelves in my living room look a bit more modern without completely changing them. That means mainly surface treatment and possibly adding small details like decorative moldings or changing the handles. I’ve heard that some shelves can be nicely painted with chalk paint. What do you think about that? Maybe you could add some input?

Regarding the use of chalk paint on Hemnes shelves: it is definitely possible, but there are a few important points to consider. Chalk paint adheres well to wood, but the surface usually requires a primer and especially a sealing layer with a suitable wax or clear coat to make it resistant to scratches and moisture.

Furthermore, thorough sanding of the original surface is important, as Hemnes shelves are often coated with a thin layer of lacquer or stain that can otherwise hinder adhesion.

For a modern look, chalk paint can be very suitable, as it provides a matte, velvety finish that is currently very popular.

I advise against applying a thick coat, as the paint can easily chip. Thin, multiple layers are better.

When sealing, it is important to use products compatible with chalk paint; otherwise, cracking may occur.

That’s exactly been my experience as well! I once painted a Hemnes shelf with chalk paint and then treated it with furniture wax. The finish was really amazing! It gives the wood a nice feel while still providing protection.

Also, I think you can really enhance the shelf with small DIY details like new handles or stickers. You can easily replace the handles, which makes a big difference and is super simple.
