AnleoHello everyone,
I recently purchased some Ikea Besta furniture and am now looking for suitable care products to protect the material as well as possible and preserve the surfaces. Since these furniture pieces often consist of a combination of wood fiberboard with foil or lacquer layers, I am unsure which wood care or cleaning lotion is appropriate. I would also like to know what to pay special attention to during use in order to avoid long-term damage such as surface peeling or discoloration.
Could you please recommend which care products you use or would suggest for Besta furniture? I am especially interested in whether there are differences between matte and glossy surfaces and if special cleaners are necessary. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Anleo,
I understand that choosing suitable care products for Ikea BESTA furniture can be quite challenging. These pieces are usually made from particleboard or MDF, covered with foil, melamine, or sometimes lacquer, which makes maintenance a bit more demanding.
In general, I recommend avoiding oil-based or harsh cleaning agents on foil surfaces, which applies to most BESTA models, as they can damage the foil and reduce adhesion. The best care method is to use a slightly damp microfiber cloth without adding alcohol or strong solvents. For light cleaning, a mild dish soap diluted in water works well.
If you want a care product specifically, there are furniture or plastic care products available from specialist retailers that protect the surface and add a slight gloss without damaging the foil. However, use them sparingly! It’s always advisable to test on an inconspicuous spot first.
For matte surfaces, it’s especially important not to use waxes or oil-based polishes, as these leave film residues that spoil the matte appearance. For glossy surfaces, there are also special polishes, but again, they should be applied sparingly.
Avoid abrasive sponges and cleaners at all costs, as they can cause scratches.
If you like, I can also recommend product names that work well for this.
Best regards!

In addition to the previous recommendations, I would like to address the specific materials used in BESTA furniture, as these are crucial for proper care.
- Foil-coated MDF or particleboard panels should only be cleaned with pH-neutral cleaners that do not contain solvents. This protects the foil from swelling or surface damage.
- Painted surfaces are more resistant and can be cleaned with mild all-purpose cleaners, but they should still not be overly wet to avoid water spots and discoloration.
For maintenance, I recommend the following procedure:
- First, remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Then wipe the furniture with a damp cloth and a mild cleaning agent.
- For small stains and fingerprints, special furniture cleaning wipes that do not contain harsh chemicals are suitable.
It is important to use special polishes with caution on polished or glossy surfaces, such as high-gloss finishes, as improper use can cause streaks.
In the end, most Ikea BESTA furniture is relatively easy to maintain if you avoid abrasive materials and harsh cleaners.

The best option for maintenance is a slightly damp microfiber cloth without adding alcohol or harsh solvents. Exactly! That’s the best advice! I’ve had my BESTA cabinets for years and have cleaned them almost exclusively with microfiber and a little water – no problem!
Sometimes I also use a few drops of mild dish soap solution if there’s heavier dirt – but only very sparingly.
And yes, no abrasive sponges! They leave unsightly marks on the surface. It’s better to always be gentle, which saves you a lot of time from having to polish later.
In my experience, care products made specifically for plastic surfaces are really helpful if you want to maintain the shine – but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Give it a try and you’ll see: the furniture stays looking nice much longer. Always remember: less is more when it comes to care! 😉
Hello Anleo,
I would like to provide a more detailed overview of the care and potential issues with Ikea BESTA furniture. These pieces are durable, but their longevity depends on proper maintenance.
1. Material Analysis:
The surfaces are typically coated with melamine resin foil, which is a thin protective layer that needs to be preserved through proper cleaning and care. These are not solid wood pieces, so traditional wood care methods are not always suitable.
2. Cleaning Recommendations:
- Use only lukewarm water to clean the surface, preferably with a mild, neutral pH cleaner.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, alcohol-based cleaners, and acetone-based products.
- Do not use abrasive pads or sponges, as they can scratch the foil.
3. Care Products:
- There are special plastic or furniture care products containing silicone or wax to maintain shine and keep the surface smooth. It is important to use these sparingly and follow the product instructions.
- For matte surfaces, mild care products without oil or wax additives are recommended to avoid altering the texture.
4. Application Tips:
- Always test the product on an inconspicuous area first!
- After application, remove the product with a clean, soft cloth and polish.
- Regular care every few months significantly extends the lifespan.
A quick follow-up question: Do you also clean and maintain the inside surfaces and doors of your BESTA furniture? These often require different care because the surfaces vary.
If you like, I can prepare a list of specific care products based on my own experience that I can recommend.
I hope this helps you!
