Hello everyone,
I have a small problem with my IKEA Billy bookcases: the hinges have started squeaking quite loudly when opening and closing the doors. The noise might be due to insufficient lubrication or worn parts, but I’m not sure.
I have already tried carefully oiling the hinges, but that only helped temporarily.
My question to you is: what are the best and at the same time gentle methods to permanently stop squeaking Billy hinges? Are there specific maintenance products you would recommend, or should certain components be replaced?
I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially advice that is practical from the assembly/disassembly perspective. Thanks in advance!

I noticed that when it comes to conductive components like hinges, especially on furniture such as the BILLY series, the choice of lubricant can be crucial. I definitely recommend using a high-quality synthetic silicone spray, as it not only provides long-lasting lubrication but also does not attract dust and protects both plastic and metal surfaces.
Procedure:
1. First, as mentioned before, remove all visible dirt, particularly old lubricant residues, which can become sticky and attract dust.
2. Then spray the silicone spray thoroughly and spread it with a brush or a fine cloth—this ensures better penetration of the lubricant into narrow gaps.
3. Allow some time for the lubricant to work before reassembling the hinge.
4. Test by opening and closing the door several times until the joint moves smoothly and the squeaking stops.
Important: For persistent or long-standing squeaking problems, using a thin, non-sticky PTFE oil (Teflon oil) can help, as it penetrates deeply into the moving gear teeth.
Also: When installing the hinges, make sure all screws are properly tightened but not over-tightened, since loose hinges can also cause noise.

Answer: Yes, I like to use products like WD-40 Specialist Silicone Spray or Sonax, both available from specialist retailers.
I hope these tips help you!
