Hello everyone,
I have had a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA in my living room for some time, and I’ve noticed something striking: the furniture seems to attract dust like a magnet. After just a few days, a noticeable layer of dust forms on the shelves and edges. I’m wondering whether this is due to the surface texture of the unit or if there is another reason.
Since I use the shelving regularly and don’t want to wipe it down completely all the time, I would like to ask:
What cleaning tips do you have to effectively reduce dust buildup on the KALLAX unit or at least make cleaning easier? Are there specific cleaning products, cloths, or techniques that have proven useful, especially when considering the preservation of the surface?
I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

Hey minralf!
I know the problem all too well – KALLAX really loves to attract dust, almost like it has a secret formula for it ;-)
My tip: For regular cleaning, I prefer using microfiber cloths, as they pick up dust very effectively, even without any chemicals. Usually, a little water is enough to bind and remove the dust. If there’s more dirt on the shelf, I use a mild dish soap diluted very lightly.
Important: Don’t wipe with too much moisture to avoid swelling the surface. For corners and tight spots, a small brush works well – dust tends to settle there especially.
Hopefully, this helps you a bit 🙂

Microfiber cloths are really good at picking up dustThat’s correct. Microfiber cloths are considered the standard for dust removal on smooth surfaces, as they capture fine particles without just spreading them around.
To explain: The KALLAX shelving unit is usually made from coated particleboard, which can cause the surface to become slightly electrostatically charged, increasing the attraction of dust particles.
My recommendation is to clean at least once a week to prevent larger dust buildups. Additionally, an antistatic spray can be applied after cleaning to reduce the electrostatic charge.
Some antistatic products are designed specifically for furniture and wood finishes, so please pay close attention to the product instructions to avoid damaging the surface.
As an additional tip: Avoid dry dusting with a regular dust cloth or feather duster, as this only stirs up dust and spreads it into the air.
It is better to use slightly dampened microfiber cloths. Applying a little vinegar water beforehand can also help loosen the dust without damaging the surface.
Additionally, when cleaning KALLAX shelves, pay attention to the dust in the joints and corners. A small vacuum cleaner attachment or brush can be very helpful here.

Antistatic spray should be applied after cleaning to reduce electrostatic charge. That’s a helpful tip. However, when using antistatic sprays on furniture made of particleboard with a foil coating, caution is advised as some products can damage the surface.
I recommend using a spray specifically designed for furniture or electronic devices that provides antistatic effects without leaving harmful residues. Additionally, it should be applied sparingly with a soft cloth to avoid staining.
