Hello everyone,
I have had a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA in my living room for some time, and I’ve noticed something striking: the furniture seems to attract dust like a magnet. After just a few days, a noticeable layer of dust forms on the shelves and edges. I’m wondering whether this is due to the surface texture of the unit or if there is another reason.
Since I use the shelving regularly and don’t want to wipe it down completely all the time, I would like to ask:
What cleaning tips do you have to effectively reduce dust buildup on the KALLAX unit or at least make cleaning easier? Are there specific cleaning products, cloths, or techniques that have proven useful, especially when considering the preservation of the surface?
I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

The KALLAX always collected a lot of dust for me as well!
Since I started wiping the shelves lightly with a damp cloth once a week and then regularly wiping them with an anti-static cloth, the effort has become much less! 😊
It’s a small effort, but totally worth it because the dust problem can quickly get out of control otherwise!

The piece of furniture seems to attract dust like a magnet.I would suggest that the phenomenon is more related to the indoor air environment than to the surface of the KALLAX.
If the dust isn’t appearing out of nowhere, it would be useful to know, for example, whether you have many textiles in the room that release fibers, or if there is frequent ventilation causing a lot of air movement.
With targeted room climate management (humidifiers, cleaning air filters), the amount of dust can often be reduced. The surface of the KALLAX is rather secondary.

I would argue that the phenomenon is related to the indoor air rather than the surface of the KALLAX.Interesting approach! I actually have several textiles in the same room and ventilate frequently, especially in winter. Can that really cause so much dust to settle on the shelving unit?
So far, I have focused on the furniture piece itself, but your perspective encourages me to take a closer look at the indoor air quality.
Do you have any ideas or experience on how to reduce dust accumulation caused by air and textiles?

Targeted indoor climate management (humidifiers, cleaning air filters) can often reduce the amount of dust. That is correct. Dry air promotes dust becoming airborne. Using humidifiers during winter can help settle dust particles.
More frequent cleaning of ventilation filters and radiators also reduces dusty air.
Additionally, regularly washing textiles (curtains, cushions) can lower dust levels.
This complements furniture maintenance very well.

Do you have any ideas or experience on how to reduce dust exposure from air and textiles? An air purifier with a HEPA filter can work wonders when it comes to removing fine dust particles from the air.
Additionally, you should consider how often textiles in the room are cleaned, as they are often an underestimated source of dust.
When wiping the KALLAX, as mentioned before, it is important to use only slightly damp cloths and, if necessary, apply antistatic products selectively.
