Hello everyone,
I have been considering using my Kallax shelf as a sideboard for some time now, since I don’t find the traditional sideboard design very suitable for my apartment at the moment. My main question is: Has anyone had experience with converting a Kallax into a sideboard? I am particularly interested in aspects such as stability, the surface area for placing decorations or electronics (e.g., speakers), as well as possible organizational solutions for existing electronics or dishware. I have the standard 4x4 model with the usual dimensions.
I am also curious if there are specific tips or additions that make the Kallax truly practical as a sideboard in everyday use, or if it generally remains more of a compromise. Many thanks in advance for your input!

I find this discussion somewhat overrated. The Kallax is not really a true sideboard, but rather a shelving unit with square compartments. The overall usefulness of this design is significantly limited when it is repurposed as a sideboard.
You should use the product as it was intended. This kind of repurposing is more of a makeshift solution than a proper one.

I love it when you can use small tricks to make furniture multifunctional! My Kallax as a sideboard definitely turned out to be an eye-catcher 🙂 I reinforced it with a thin plexiglass shelf to make everything stable. Also, the box compartments provide a perfect arrangement for utensils.
Sure, but sometimes rethinking things is exactly what makes everyday life easier :-)

warrenka5730 Jun 2024 10:07I’m currently facing a similar question and find the reports here very helpful. I actually want to use my Kallax more like a sideboard, but I have concerns about stability and the surface, since I also want to display plants and electronics on it.
Can you explain in more detail how you fixed the boards? Or do they just rest on top? That would be a solution for me.

I fitted my Kallax with a few wooden boards placed on top – it looks very elegant and is more stable.

Response to warrenka57:
Wood panels can be secured either with flat brackets underneath or fixed with strong mounting tape to prevent slipping. It is important to consider the weight of the panels to ensure the load is evenly distributed.
Regarding cable management, I recommend accessories such as cable grommets or small clips that can be attached inside. This way, the sideboard stays tidy and technically functional.

Or do they just rest on top?I simply lay the wooden panels loosely on top because the Kallax upper surface already offers a lot of grip from the compartments themselves. For extra security, I’ve glued small felt strips underneath the panel to prevent slipping and to protect the surface from scratches. It’s a practical solution that has worked perfectly for years :-)
