Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Kallax shelf unit that I bought about 6 years ago. Over time, some unattractive stains have appeared on the surface, apparently caused by moisture and light wear. The shelf is otherwise still stable and functional, but the appearance bothers me more and more.

Now I’m facing a decision: Should I simply buy a new Kallax, or would it be more sensible to sand it down and repaint it?

Does anyone have experience with painting Kallax or similar IKEA furniture? What type of paint would you recommend to ensure the surface not only looks good but also remains durable? And is the effort really worth it compared to buying a new one?

I look forward to your insights and tips!

If the shelf is sturdy, you can sand it down well and paint it with acrylic lacquer. This is more cost-effective than buying a new one and will last for years. Important: Clean it thoroughly beforehand and use a primer.

Hello Elonfra, I had a similar issue with my Kallax. I would advise against water-based varnishes because they are not as durable. Polyurethane (PU) varnishes for furniture are better, as they are hard-wearing and water-resistant.

If you paint the shelf, be sure to sand thoroughly beforehand and remove all dust. Then apply several thin coats; this improves the surface and provides longer-lasting protection.

Hey, it almost looks like your Kallax will need a makeover soon! 🙂

I think painting is definitely worth it if the basic structure is solid. Buying new is more convenient, but it can get expensive quickly. Plus: Doing it yourself gives a bit of pride when the result turns out well! 😉

A quick tip: Sand thoroughly before painting and ideally work outside or in a dust-free area. Otherwise, you might end up with spots on the surface.

Good luck!

Let's be honest: The question "Refinish or buy new?" is often answered too simply. Sure, buying new is convenient, but throwing away furniture just because of a few stains is a pure waste of resources.

That sums it up well. But you also need to be willing to do the work. I doubt everyone has the patience for sanding and refinishing.

If you don’t have the patience for that, it’s better to buy new and then look for a model that’s easier to maintain.

Technically, the IKEA Kallax is made of particleboard with a melamine coating. However, this surface cannot be sanded down to the raw material.

To remove stains or rebuild the surface, the coating would need to be roughly sanded, a suitable primer applied, and then painted with a lacquer specifically designed for wood-based materials. PU lacquers are actually the better choice here, as they are more durable and scratch-resistant.

The cost and effort should not be underestimated. However, if the shelf is solid and has sentimental value, the refurbishment is worthwhile. Otherwise, a pragmatic new purchase is often the better option.
