Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from IKEA that I mainly use for books and decorations. I’ve noticed that the lower compartments regularly get very dusty, even though I clean the shelf regularly. The bottom compartments are especially problematic, where the dust quickly builds up into a thick layer. The apartment isn’t particularly dusty otherwise, and I can’t really track down the source of the dust. Does anyone have tips on how to better manage the dust issue, especially in the lower compartments? Are there any special cleaning techniques, prevention methods, or practical tools for these open shelves? I would appreciate any experiences or advice!

Alternatively, you can place dust protection mats inside or close off the lower compartments with boxes. That’s a good idea. Do you have any recommendations for dust protection mats? Are there specific materials that are particularly effective at preventing dust?

Antistatic sprays that reduce dust adhesion. Sounds interesting. Do you have any advice on what to look out for, such as ingredients or application instructions?

Are your windows usually open, or do you ventilate a lot? My windows are mostly closed because we live near a busy road. I mainly ventilate briefly in the mornings, but not for long. That could affect the dust, right?
It’s great that you pay such close attention to the lower compartments! 🙂 Imagine I put colorful boxes into my Kallax, which not only reduce dust but also add a cool look. Plus: a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment removes dust really well. And hey, wiping down briefly every day is almost like exercise – it’s fun and keeps things fresh!
To control dust in lower shelves, I recommend the following: 1. Regularly mop the floor and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth to reduce airborne dust. 2. Use closed storage boxes to minimize dust entry. 3. Air filters or air purifiers can improve air quality and thus reduce dust buildup. Using anti-static microfiber cloths also makes it easier to remove dust without just spreading it around.
One more note regarding room ventilation: Since your windows are mostly closed and the environment is close to traffic, it is important to be cautious with regular airing. However, targeted short bursts of ventilation are more effective than leaving the windows slightly open for a long time, as this reduces the amount of dust entering. Additionally, it would be ideal to clean the floor in front of the shelving unit using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, which captures fine dust particles more effectively than standard models.
The positioning of the shelving unit could also be a factor—if air currents from a nearby heater or an air conditioning unit reach the lower shelves directly, this can increase dust accumulation. Check if this might be the case.

I’m just wondering whether it’s effective for a single corner or if it works better for entire rooms. Has anyone had good experiences with an air purifier specifically regarding dust on shelves?
