Hello everyone,
I have a small problem with my IKEA Billy bookcases: the hinges have started squeaking quite loudly when opening and closing the doors. The noise might be due to insufficient lubrication or worn parts, but I’m not sure.
I have already tried carefully oiling the hinges, but that only helped temporarily.
My question to you is: what are the best and at the same time gentle methods to permanently stop squeaking Billy hinges? Are there specific maintenance products you would recommend, or should certain components be replaced?
I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially advice that is practical from the assembly/disassembly perspective. Thanks in advance!

First, it is important to correctly identify the cause of the squeaking noise. Usually, it is caused by insufficient lubrication on the moving parts of the hinge.
I recommend the following procedure:
1. Remove the cabinet door: Open it and loosen the screws (typically Phillips head screws on the hinges).
2. Clean off any old lubricants or dirt, for example with a lint-free cloth and some isopropanol.
3. Apply a suitable lubricant: Silicone spray is ideal here because it does not harden and does not attract dust. Other oils like WD-40 can solve the initial problem but are less suitable for long-term use.
4. Open and close the hinges several times to allow the lubricant to spread evenly.
5. Reinstall the doors and test their function.
If the squeaking persists, replacing the hinge insert might be necessary. IKEA carries spare parts for BILLY, which are easy to obtain and replace.
In short: cleaning plus a suitable lubricant is usually sufficient.

I will add a brief guide:
1. Removing the door: BILLY hinges can usually be detached by lifting the door upwards and gently pulling the hinges away from the cabinet frame.
2. Clean the hinges thoroughly: Dust often accumulates and, combined with old oil, causes sticking and squeaking.
3. For lubrication, I recommend silicone spray or specialized hinge oil. It’s important to use oil that doesn’t gum up over time.
4. After applying lubricant, move the mechanism to ensure even distribution.
5. Reinstalling: Carefully hang the door back in place, making sure the hinges fit properly into their slots.
Important: Check for wear on models with plastic bushings. Brittle or damaged bushings can also cause noise and should be replaced.
Summary: Cleanliness + appropriate lubricant + inspection of mechanical parts is the key.

I can only echo this.

I would like to elaborate on this a bit, as there are two types of BILLY hinges: on one hand, the typical metal hinges with an integrated soft-close mechanism, and on the other, simple folding hinges.
In the case of metal hinges, squeaking noises often occur when the soft-close mechanism no longer functions properly or the plastic pivot bushings are worn out.
Procedure:
- Remove the door by unhinging it and completely disassemble the hinges.
- Take apart the mechanical components as far as possible.
- Inspect plastic parts for cracks or deformations.
- Clean with alcohol or appropriate solvents to remove old residues.
- Then treat the sliding surfaces with thin silicone spray or graphite powder (use graphite sparingly as it produces dust).
- Reassemble the hinges and apply a light oiling (do not use too much).
If the plastic bushings are worn or the soft-close mechanism is defective, a complete replacement of the hinge mechanism is advisable.
One more question for you: Are your hinges equipped with a soft-close feature?

Thank you for the detailed answers so far.
Regarding your question, Noahlu: Yes, my BILLY hinges do have this soft-close damper integrated, which I would describe on Amazon as "BILLY door hinge with damper."
What you said about the plastic pivot bushings sounds very plausible. When opening my doors, I have also sometimes noticed slight irregularities when closing, which I had so far attributed to dirt.
I will try your tips with silicone spray and cleaning the hinges and report back. If that doesn’t help, I will probably have to consider new hinges.
One more question: Is there a particular brand or type of lubricant that lasts especially long and doesn’t attract dust so quickly?
Procedure: remove the door, fully dismantle the hinges... then treat the sliding surfaces with low-viscosity silicone spray or graphite powder...
Good instructions, I will proceed accordingly.
