roploHello everyone, I am currently installing Ikea Metod drawers and have the issue that they don’t always slide completely smoothly. What specific tips are there for installing Metod drawers so that they operate cleanly and without resistance? I have already tightened all screws correctly and mounted the runners according to the instructions, but they still occasionally catch slightly when opening and closing. Are there any adjustments, alignment tricks for the runners, or special fine-tuning steps that should be considered? It would be great if you could share your detailed experiences, as I want to use the drawers as smoothly and durably as possible.
Hello roplo, your topic is very well formulated and addresses a point that many people underestimate. With Ikea Metod drawers, it is important not only to tighten the screws and roughly attach the rails but also to pay attention to precise alignment. Here are a few tips from me for smooth operation:
- Check whether the rails are mounted exactly parallel to each other. Even small deviations can cause sticking.
- Use a spirit level to ensure accuracy during installation.
- Make sure that the drawer boxes themselves are flush at the front and back, meaning they are not warped or twisted.
- The rollers or runners should be clean and free of dust – a bit of wax can sometimes improve smoothness.
- Metod drawers often have small adjustment screws on the drawer front to fine-tune the front panel alignment. Use these so the front panel sits very close to the frame or cabinet side without sticking.
- Check the attachment of the rails to the carcass: if the screws are tightened too much and the wood slightly warps, this can also cause resistance.
If you have already thoroughly checked everything yourself, these fine adjustments usually help. Good luck!

Another small tip that is often underestimated: If you assemble the drawers temporarily before installation and open and close them a few times, it often helps to loosen the initial resistance. Sometimes the runners settle in a bit better after a few movements.
Also, it helps to carefully treat the rails with a very fine silicone spray. Please don’t use too much—just a short spray—so the mechanism runs smoothly without attracting dust.
I also usually sand the edge of the drawer front slightly if it sticks a bit. With Metod, this can provide that final fine adjustment if the wood is just barely touching.

The most important thing: never build blindly or follow the Ikea instructions step-by-step without question. It’s better to measure yourself, align everything properly, and make adjustments if needed. It’s not rocket science, but the effort pays off. And for those thinking “just tightening the screws is enough”: no, it can even be counterproductive if a screw warps the wood. Better to take more time and install the drawer carefully.
I would also recommend using sturdy metal drawer slides whenever possible, though obviously that’s not an option with Ikea. Still, if you’re feeling frustrated, it’s worth considering alternatives.

The rollers or tracks should be clean and free of dust – a bit of wax can sometimes improve the smoothness of movement. That’s absolutely true. I was unsure at first and had some minor issues with a drawer. It really helped me to clean the tracks thoroughly – dust and wood chips can cause sticking quite easily. After that, I applied a small amount of beeswax to the contact points. Since then, the drawer operates very smoothly and has become noticeably quieter when opening.
Also: patience is important. When you use the drawers over a longer period, the mechanism often runs more smoothly. If you still have the option to finely adjust the front panel, make sure to do so carefully. Often, even the smallest differences affect the free movement.
I hope this helps you a bit!
