Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf from Ikea and unfortunately found that some parts were missing. Specifically, the middle shelves and a few screws were not included in the package. My question is: What is the best way to handle missing parts for Billy bookshelves? Are there official methods through Ikea to obtain missing individual components, or do you have other experiences or tips for getting the missing pieces as easily as possible?
A brief explanation upfront: This is a standard Billy bookshelf measuring 80x28x202 cm (31½x11×79½ inches), and I made sure to order the complete set – but obviously, something was still missing.
I look forward to your helpful responses!

Based on my experience with Billy shelves and missing parts, it is important to proceed systematically. I would like to structure your process as follows:
- First, carefully check all packaging; sometimes screws and small connectors are in small plastic bags inside the assembly instructions or cardboard flaps.
- If parts are missing, photograph the packaging with the barcode and note the serial number if available.
- Contact Ikea customer service with your request and provide the article number, purchase date, and the method of purchase (online or in-store).
I would also add that some parts of the Billy series from Ikea are modular and standardized. If Ikea cannot provide a direct solution, it may sometimes be possible to use compatible screws and shelves from a hardware store as replacements. However, this should be considered a last resort if Ikea does not deliver the replacement parts quickly.
Could you please also specify where the shelf was purchased (online or in-store) and the exact date?

Quick tip: When you call, check the warehouse times and store opening hours to avoid waiting. Thanks for the tip! I bought the shelf at an IKEA store in Frankfurt about 2 weeks ago. I don’t have the original receipt anymore, but I do have a customer card there, so I’ll try to find my purchase through their system.

The idea about hardware store replacement parts sounds interesting, but I’d still prefer to try IKEA first. However, the thought of simply buying these standard Billy shelf boards as replacements myself is still in the back of my mind.
I understand how frustrating it is to look forward to assembling furniture and then discover missing parts. I once had the same issue with a Billy shelf, and it was really annoying.
What helped me was staying calm and calling customer service right away. They were very understanding and sent me a package with all the missing parts.
I can only recommend having all the information ready as precisely as possible – this makes the process much easier.
If you’re still unsure whether parts are truly missing or just misplaced, just ask for search tips, which Ikea often provides.
Good luck!

I would also recommend checking for completeness again when purchasing/in the store or when ordering – sometimes it becomes easier to spot missing parts when unpacking if you follow a systematic approach.
