Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Billy shelf where the screws holding the back panel tend to loosen repeatedly. The shelf is relatively stable, but when I shake it or it is slightly loaded, I notice the screws become looser, and I have to tighten them again. I have already checked that I’m fully tightening the screws and sometimes even use a small washer. However, this doesn’t hold them securely in the long term.

My question is: What can I do to prevent the screws on Billy shelves from constantly loosening? Are there any special techniques, materials to help secure them, or other tips you would recommend?

I would appreciate it if anyone has experience or advice on how to fix this issue permanently.

Hi, it’s best to use screws with thread-locking compound, for example Loctite. Alternatively, wood glue can be used to reinforce the screw holes. This way, they are less likely to loosen.

The repeated loosening of the screws in the Billy shelf is usually due to the simple construction and the materials used. IKEA often uses particleboard with a lower density, so the screws do not always hold optimally.

For a long-lasting solution, I recommend:

1. Using screws with a slightly larger diameter, if possible.
2. Installing wood threaded inserts (similar to HeliCoil for wood).
3. Applying thread-locking fluid or medium-strength thread-locking adhesive.
4. If necessary, inserting small wooden dowels or toothpicks into the drill hole with wood glue to increase the contact area.

Combining these measures will noticeably improve stability.

I would unscrew the screws once more and slightly fill the holes with wood glue. Then insert the screws again. This fills the gap and improves the screw’s hold.

The screws might be too short for the material thickness. Longer screws could help. Don’t forget better fastening using washers.

Oh, I know that all too well! I simply used thread locker on my screws, and it worked perfectly! It keeps the screws really tight 🙂 Definitely give it a try!
