Hello everyone,
I am currently focusing on the maintenance and upkeep of IKEA Metod drawers and have a fairly specific question: What options are available today for servicing these drawers in terms of their mechanics and materials to maintain functionality over the years or to effectively address issues such as squeaky slides, stiff drawer runners, or worn damping systems?
I have already followed the basic cleaning tips, but I am especially interested in practical solutions regarding lubrication, installation checks, potentially necessary replacement of wear parts, or even simple repair methods that amateurs can carry out without having to replace the entire drawer.
Has anyone gained experience or knows reliable methods, including the importance of different lubricants (e.g. silicone spray vs. Teflon spray), which are specifically recommended for the Metod slides?
Thank you in advance for any well-informed answers!

Hello,
for the maintenance of IKEA Metod drawers, I recommend regularly cleaning the slides with a dry cloth and, if needed, using a special silicone spray.
I would avoid oil, as it tends to attract dirt. If dampers no longer work, they can often be replaced individually without having to replace the entire drawer.

For the proper maintenance of IKEA Metod drawers, the following points should be noted:
- The runners are usually made of metal with plastic components, so only a lubricant that does not leave residues and does not damage the plastic parts should be used. Silicone spray is very suitable for this purpose.
- Cleaning the runners is best done with a lint-free cloth to remove any buildup.
- Squeaking drawer slides are often caused by missing or outdated lubrication.
- For disassembly and manual inspection of the rollers and damping elements, it is recommended to consult the IKEA manual to avoid material breakage.
- Damping systems are modular; replacement parts can be purchased and changed individually.
It is important to handle the plastic guides carefully during maintenance, as they can wear out more quickly otherwise.

Silicone spray is very suitable here.In my view, that is not necessarily the best solution. While silicone spray can provide short-term lubrication, it often does not adhere long enough and attracts dust if it does not dry completely.
Instead, I would recommend Teflon-based lubricants, as they offer better adhesion and longer-lasting lubrication without attracting dirt.

I would rather avoid oil because it attracts dirt.I agree with that as well, but a lubricant should also be UV- or temperature-resistant since kitchens are often exposed to changing conditions.
I would also be interested to hear if anyone has experience with DIY maintenance solutions, as replacement parts from IKEA are not always readily available.
Additional information:
- If you carefully disassemble a Metod drawer, you can often easily clean the sliding rails and remove any dirt, which significantly improves smooth operation.
- Make sure the rails are clean and dry after maintenance before applying any lubricant.
- As mentioned before, silicone sprays tend to attract dirt relatively quickly, but they are still the most commonly used due to their compatibility with plastic.
- For replacing the damping mechanism, there is a small spare parts kit from IKEA that can be installed without much effort.
- In general, it is advisable to perform maintenance at regular intervals, approximately once a year, depending on how frequently the drawers are used.
If the sliding rails are bent, replacement is the only option, as otherwise the functionality is severely compromised.
I hope these tips help with targeted maintenance.
