Hello everyone, I recently got an IKEA Metod kitchen and I’m thinking about the best way to clean the countertops without damaging the surface. The countertops are made of decorative laminate and, although they look sturdy, I want to avoid them becoming dull or discolored from harsh cleaners or incorrect treatment. Does anyone have experience with which cleaning products or methods work particularly well? I’m especially interested in tips for removing stains like water marks, grease, or minor scratches without harming the surface. Which home remedies or specialized cleaners are recommended or should be avoided? Thanks in advance for your informed advice!

Hello ARDAEL, your question is very relevant since laminated countertops are particularly sensitive to incorrect handling. First, for basic cleaning: a mild dish soap with warm water is your best option. Use a soft cloth or sponge to avoid scratches. It is important not to use abrasive products or harsh chemicals like acetone or ammonia, as these can damage the surface design.

For stubborn grease stains, I recommend a vinegar-water mixture (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water), but use it carefully and do not leave it on too long. Be sure to wipe again with clean water afterward and dry thoroughly.

Another tip: for small scratches or dull spots, specialized wax or laminate polish can be used, but only sparingly and after the surface is clean and dry.

In summary:
- Mild cleaning solution, warm water + dish soap
- Use a soft cloth
- No abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals
- Vinegar-water for grease stains, apply briefly
- Laminate polish for minor scratches

I hope this helps!

Hello everyone, I would like to add a few points to naujon’s excellent explanation:

This is a very important tip because vinegar does dissolve lime scale and grease well, but if left on too long, it can leave a dull film.

I also recommend always wiping down thoroughly with clean water after cleaning and drying the countertop immediately. This prevents water spots and lime stains.

If you often face stubborn dirt, a special laminate cleaner available on the market can be helpful. However, it is important not to use an all-purpose cleaner containing bleach.

A common mistake is using abrasive sponges or steel wool – these scratch the surface and make it more prone to dirt. It’s better to use microfiber cloths.

Another effective method: for water spots, try wiping with a dry microfiber cloth; sometimes that alone is enough.

A brief addition: Please never use aggressive solvents, as the laminate underneath can be damaged. Also, avoid abrasive cleaners.

Damp cleaning is completely sufficient. For stains, do not rub; instead, gently dab.

It can be stated that IKEA Metod countertops, which are made of chipboard material coated with plastic, are best cleaned using neutral cleaners. My recommendations are based on manufacturer guidelines:

- Use warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, alcohol, acetone, gasoline, and other solvents.
- After cleaning, wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth and dry completely.

For stains such as food spills, a brief application of diluted vinegar is recommended. Make sure the solution does not remain on the surface for longer than 5 minutes.

Alternatively, you can also use PVC or laminate cleaners designed specifically for coated surfaces.

This approach ensures long-lasting durability and maintains the appearance of the countertop.

I personally always use warm water and a little dish soap. Then I wipe it down with a dry cloth. No alcohol or abrasive cleaners. That is completely sufficient for daily cleaning.
