Hello everyone,

I am planning to move soon and have several Ikea Besta furniture pieces that I would like to disassemble carefully and reassemble later without any issues. Since these pieces are often custom-configured and use different assembly systems, I am looking for a good and systematic method to dismantle them as gently and error-free as possible. I am especially interested in tips for preparation (tools, marking the parts), handling the connectors, and storing screws and small components. Additionally, I would like to know how you document which parts belong where to ensure an exact and trouble-free reassembly.

Do you have any proven procedures or even checklists that you would recommend? I look forward to your practical advice and experiences to make the move with the BESTA cabinets as smooth as possible.

For the safe disassembly and later reassembly of Ikea BESTA furniture, I recommend the following systematic approach:

- Preparation: Gather all necessary tools, especially a good Phillips screwdriver and an Allen key. A small flathead screwdriver often makes it easier to open cam locks.
- Systematic documentation: Take photos of each piece of furniture and every step before dismantling. Mark the backs of the panels with a pencil or small labels to indicate their original position.
- Storage of connectors: Use small labeled containers or bags for screws, dowels, and cam locks. Note which piece of furniture and which component the parts belong to.
- Careful disassembly: Start with the doors or drawers, remove them, then take off the back panels. Only then loosen the main connections to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the parts.
- Packaging: Wrap larger panels in blankets or stretch film to prevent damage.

This method reduces the chances of mistakes and makes reassembly much easier. Ideally, check for possible damage during the disassembly process.

If you have any questions about specific steps, I’m happy to clarify.

Hello Dariuskau,

I have moved several times with Ikea BESTA furniture and can share some tips to make disassembling and reassembling easier for you:

- Start by making a simple sketch or diagram to record the individual parts and their positions.
- If possible, label the panels on the back with a pencil. This helps you quickly find the correct orientation during reassembly.
- Organize screws and small parts into small bags and label each one (e.g., "Cabinet top right – door screws"). This prevents confusion.
- Take photos of the entire cabinet from the outside and inside, especially if there are special fittings or unusual modifications.
- Handle the cam locks carefully, as they tend to get damaged if too much force is applied.
- Use blankets or bubble wrap to protect your furniture parts during transport.

These steps will help you disassemble the furniture without damage and with less stress. If you want, I can explain in more detail how I organize the order of disassembly.

Good luck with your move!

This is really the most important point. Without labeling, reassembly becomes a guessing game.

Also, always remove doors and drawers first. Otherwise, pressure can build up during disassembly, which may damage the panels.

It’s best to sort small parts and store them labeled in small bags, as already mentioned.
