Hello everyone,

I’ve recently been having quite an annoying issue with my Ikea Billy bookshelf: the hinges squeak louder and louder when opening and closing, which can be quite disturbing, especially in quiet moments. I believe the problem is with the metal hinges on the doors, not the wood joints. My question is: what methods or materials have proven effective in permanently stopping this squeaking on the Billy hinges without causing any damage?

I would appreciate tips that can be easily done at home with simple means, but I’m also open to recommendations for special products that work well. Please also share what should be avoided to prevent damage to the hinges or loss of function.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The issue of squeaking hinges on Ikea Billy bookcases is well known and often caused by a lack of lubrication or dirt buildup.

To fix this, I recommend the following steps:

1. Cleaning: First, clean the hinges with a lint-free cloth and, if necessary, some isopropyl alcohol to remove old lubricant residues, dust, or dirt.

2. Choosing the lubricant: For metal hinges, silicone sprays or special sewing machine oils work best. WD-40 can help but is more of a cleaner/penetrating oil and should not be used solely as a long-term lubricant, as it evaporates quickly.

3. Application: Apply the lubricant sparingly directly into the joints by spraying or carefully using a drop of oil. Then move the hinge several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

4. Check: Wipe off any excess oil with a cloth to avoid attracting dust.

Note that classic petroleum jelly or grease is too thick and tends to attract dirt, which can worsen the problem.

This method is proven, causes no damage, and is easy to carry out.

Hello sitotar,

I would like to add a few practical tips that might help you:

That’s really a good tip. I once had a similar problem and had good results with silicone spray. It’s important that the hinge is completely dry before applying the lubricant; otherwise, it won’t work properly.

If you don’t have silicone spray at the moment, a drop of sewing machine oil can also suffice. However, I would advise against using regular cooking oils, as they can become sticky and attract dust.

One thing that is often overlooked: also check the screws of the hinges. Sometimes the screws are a bit loose, which can cause squeaking noises. Tighten them carefully, but not too much, to avoid damaging the wood.

Finally, one last tip: if the cabinet is very old and the hinges are heavily worn, it can help to remove the hinges completely, clean them, and replace them if necessary. It’s not difficult work, but can bring long-term benefits.

I hope this helps you!

Hello sitotar,

I would like to explain the possible causes and solutions in more detail because "squeaky hinges" often have several contributing factors.

First, it is important to know exactly what type of hinges are installed. Billy cabinet hinges are usually concealed press-in hinges with a spring mechanism, consisting of several moving metal parts. Squeaking often occurs due to friction between metal components, lack of lubrication, or contamination.

I can only emphasize this: it is best to clean the hinges thoroughly first, for example with a mild degreaser or isopropanol, to remove old residues, dust, or preservative oils.

The following procedure is recommended:

1. Remove the hinge from the cabinet if possible. This makes cleaning and lubrication much easier.

2. Clean the hinge parts thoroughly, especially the inner sides of the moving elements.

3. Use a high-quality, low-viscosity lubricant. I recommend a fine machine oil or special graphite oil for hinges. Silicone oil is also suitable but can dry out over time, so reapplication may be necessary.

4. When reassembling, make sure the hinge plates are correctly aligned. Incorrect alignment can also cause noise.

5. After installation, test regularly by opening and closing the hinge several times to distribute the lubricant.

One more question for you: How old is the cabinet, and how often are the doors used? Do you have pets or household items that put extra strain on the doors? This information helps to better assess wear and tear.

Regards!
