Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookshelf with some missing or broken screws. Since I want to continue using the shelf safely and securely, I am looking for specific solutions on how to find replacements for these particular screws. I understand that it can sometimes be difficult to get the exact parts from IKEA, and I have also considered using similar screws from a hardware store. However, I am unsure about the correct size and strength, as the shelf has a load-bearing function. How do you deal with missing or damaged screws in Billy bookshelves? Do you have any tips on what to watch out for and where is the best place to get replacements? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Unfortunately, some screws for the adjustable shelves in my Billy unit are broken, and they are no longer listed separately as replacement parts at IKEA.

This can happen, as some small parts are no longer sold individually. Screws for Billy shelves are often so-called cam lock screws or small dowel screws with a specific length. When replacing them, you should carefully match the exact length and diameter to ensure they hold securely in the shelf board and don’t slip through.

Could using the wrong screws pose a safety risk?

Exactly, the screws need to support the weight and forces applied, especially if you plan to store heavy books or equipment on the shelves. For replacements from hardware stores, I recommend zinc-plated or stainless steel screws that are rust-resistant. Important: check the thread pitch and the bolt diameter. Screws with a thread that is too coarse won’t grip well in the holes and can damage the wood. A tip: if you know the dimensions, you can also search online at specialized stores (e.g., Schrauben24) for suitable cam lock screws—there are often product lists available for IKEA replacements.

is it necessary to strictly use specific types of screws, or can slightly different screws also work for adjustable shelves?

Basically, anything that fits and holds works. 🙂 If you can’t find the original cam lock screws, you can use small machine screws with suitable anchors. Just make sure they’re not too thick or too long. When working with wood, it’s better to use several thin screws rather than one large screw that might split the wood.

A little life hack: sometimes replacement kits for Billy shelves are available cheaply on online marketplaces – these include screws, anchors, and sometimes even small metal brackets. This way, you can ensure everything stays secure without much hassle.
