Hello everyone, I am currently exploring different ways to customize Ikea Platsa cabinet fronts for my new project. I am particularly interested in hearing about creative design ideas for Platsa fronts that go beyond simple color changes. I’m looking for suggestions that are not only visually appealing but also functional—any tips on materials, techniques, or combinations that break away from the typical Ikea look are very welcome. Perhaps you have personal experiences or unique approaches to make the fronts more lively and individual. I look forward to an engaging exchange!
I find it interesting how often films and paints are used, especially. However, I question the sustainability of these solutions: How durable are they? Don’t laminated or painted fronts tend to become unattractive quickly with frequent use? Are there any experiences with more durable yet still creative methods? Perhaps the appearance should be addressed with replaceable elements or modular fronts instead of relying solely on surface treatments.

However, I question the sustainability of these solutions That’s a valid point. For most color finishes, I strongly recommend applying a protective topcoat—such as acrylic or polyurethane varnishes—that provide either a matte or glossy finish and significantly enhance durability. Otherwise, surfaces like cabinet fronts can quickly become vulnerable to scratches or wear during everyday use.
Sorry, but I find this constant hype around films and paint a bit monotonous. Why not have the courage to use the Ikea Platsa in a completely different way? For example, with fabric coverings or even by redesigning the fronts themselves – that is, completely removing the door fronts and instead building simple frames to incorporate shelves, baskets, or flap doors using unconventional materials.
This approach is much more radical, personal, and breaks away from the standard aesthetic. To me, creativity often means breaking the mold, not just changing surface layers.

For anyone taking this route, I recommend careful preparation:
- Take measurements and select materials (wood strips for frames, durable fabrics)
- Stabilize the frame and create attachment points
- Stretch the fabric tightly, possibly securing it with staples
A beautiful, sustainable, and personalized solution that fundamentally changes the character of PLATSA!

For example, I completely covered doors with marbles (sealed with clear lacquer) – the effect is amazing and becomes a conversation starter with friends. Don’t hesitate, try something new!
