Hello everyone,

I have purchased several Ikea Platsa furniture pieces and would like to customize them to better match my living style. I’m unsure about the best approach to either professionally paint them or alternatively apply adhesive foil without damaging the surface.

My questions are:
- What preparations are necessary to ready the furniture surface for paint or adhesive film?
- Which types of paint are most suitable for the Platsa elements (for example, spray paint, acrylic paint, etc.)?
- Are there specific adhesive films that work well on Platsa furniture and are durable?
- What should I particularly keep in mind during application to ensure a neat finish that lasts a long time?

I have some experience with basic renovations but want to avoid costly mistakes. Thanks for any tips and shared experiences!

One point not to be underestimated: depending on how the Platsa panels are used, the surface load varies significantly.

- For interior areas, a film is often sufficient if there is no direct mechanical stress (e.g., frequently placing heavy objects).
- For fronts or visible surfaces that are often touched, I recommend paint, as it is more durable.

Besides the paint types mentioned, you can also use furniture or synthetic resin paint, but in that case, surface preparation needs to be even more precise.

Also, when using film, make sure it is UV-resistant if the furniture is placed near a window; otherwise, the film will fade quickly.

2. If you want to paint:
- Apply a primer or bonding agent, preferably acrylic-based, to ensure better paint adhesion.

That is correct, and I want to emphasize it again: the bonding primer is essential. Without it, you will quickly see chipping.

One additional tip: be sure to do fine sanding between paint layers using a sanding pad or very fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 400). This will make the surface noticeably smoother and less prone to scratches.

Of course, the drying time must be strictly observed.

This is especially important for a piece of furniture like Platsa, which gets a lot of surface use.

I would like to add a note about painting: For furniture types like Platsa, which are melamine-coated, it is important not to use filter lacquers or automotive paints, as these do not adhere well to such smooth surfaces.

Special resin-based or acrylic paints, specifically designed for this kind of furniture, are more suitable.

The same applies to films: if the surface is extremely smooth, the film may later peel off or shrink. In these cases, a light intermediate sanding sometimes provides the best results.

I also want to emphasize how important cleaning is:

- Use an appropriate cleaner, ideally alcohol-based, to remove grease and fingerprints.
- Then be sure to wipe with clean water afterward to avoid leaving any residue.

Without a clean surface, neither paint nor film will adhere properly in the long term.

Additionally, when applying film, it can be helpful to gently warm the furniture with a hairdryer beforehand if the room is cold. This can improve adhesion.

Another point about applying film:

If you want to reapply film to several panels, it is advisable to do so in a dry, dust-free environment with an optimal room temperature between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius (64 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit).

Cold conditions or high humidity can reduce the adhesive strength of the film.

Also, very smooth edges, which often occur with chipboard, should be pre-treated by either applying tape or sanding, as the film can easily peel off at the edges.

I would like to add a brief note on the topic of vapor barriers, which is often overlooked.

- Make sure not to use a cheap knife when trimming excess material, as this can cause ragged edges and damage.
- The best option is a new, sharp utility knife with a fine blade.
- It is also important to slowly and carefully remove the protective film at every step.

Many underestimate the time needed for a clean installation of the vapor barrier. Therefore, I recommend allowing at least twice the planned time to complete the work.

Work smart, not fast!
