Hello everyone,

I am planning to get an IKEA Platsa system and currently have questions about which surface finishes or surface options are actually available for the Platsa cabinets.

I understand that IKEA offers prefabricated fronts for Platsa, but I would like to know if there are additional options for surface finishing—such as special laminates, painting, coatings, or possibly individual customizations like stains or veneers.

I am particularly interested in which materials and finishes IKEA offers themselves, what might be possible through post-processing or modification, and whether there are any IKEA-authorized surface options that can be selected directly when purchasing.

Has anyone looked into the Platsa surface options in detail and can provide information about which finishes are officially or unofficially possible? Thanks for your insights!

I have had the Platsa system myself and can say from experience: the foils at IKEA are usually matte or have a slight satin finish. Some fronts have an embossed wood grain texture, so you can actually feel the pattern. It looks quite high-quality, not just plain smooth.

But as already mentioned, real wood or veneer is definitely not available from IKEA for Platsa. I also wanted something natural back then, but decided on the textured foil instead.

If you want something completely different, your only options are probably DIY treatment or replacement fronts.

Here is a brief overview of the surface finishes officially offered by IKEA for Platsa:

- Foil coating: mostly matte to satin finish, sometimes with a textured wood grain feel, available in various colors and patterns
- Melamine coating: smooth, durable surface, resistant to cuts and scratches
- Painted fronts: rather rare in Platsa, more common in other IKEA ranges

For refinishing: If you want to paint or oil the surfaces yourself, keep in mind that melamine and foil must be completely sanded or roughened beforehand – this is labor-intensive and carries some risk of damaging the panels.

Summary: IKEA provides a solid base; any customized finishing always requires do-it-yourself work.

I would like to add: There are also matching doors and drawer fronts for Platsa made of plastic or laminated wood-based panels, but no version with real wood. Alternatively, fronts can be replaced if you want something more specific.

I love Platsa precisely because of its flexibility! The official finishes look great, especially the wood grain laminates, which are really impressive. For those who want, the fronts can also be customized perfectly with acrylic paints or special films – a real eye-catcher!

A little tip from me: it’s better to test in an inconspicuous spot before painting and to use paints specially suited for films. Good luck with your customization!

Thanks for the tip! It motivates me to explore wrapping and painting options as well.

Does anyone have experience with whether the film surfaces can be removed easily if you want to refinish? Or do they adhere so strongly that it’s better to buy new fronts? I’d appreciate it if someone knows.

The films applied by IKEA on Platsa are thin plastic layers that are usually very firmly glued to the engineered wood panel. Removing the film is usually very labor-intensive and often results in damage to the surface.

If you are planning a refinishing, it is more practical either to choose completely new fronts or to properly prepare the surface (sanding, priming) and then use appropriate paint. Simply peeling off the film is almost never possible.
