á What are the most common issues encountered when assembling BILLY furniture yourself?

TauusHello everyone,
While assembling the Billy bookshelf, I often wondered what the most common issues are that people encounter during self-assembly. Iâm particularly interested in the hidden challenges that arenât immediately obvious but can cause a lot of trouble later on. Are there typical mistakes many make, for example with the screws, the fit of the parts, or possibly the instructions?
I want to be well prepared for my next BILLY assembly and avoid any surprises. It would be great if you could share your experiences and especially any specific difficulties you faced, so that others can anticipate them.

Hello Tauus,
your question about self-assembly of BILLY is really good, because there are indeed some recurring issues that I can describe in detail from my experience.
First, the instructions are generally understandable, but some of the pictograms are unfortunately ambiguous. For example, the order in which the back panel nails are screwed in is often underestimated â if this is not done precisely, the entire structure can warp slightly, which later makes it difficult to hang the shelf supports.
Second, there are problems with the screws: the cover or dowel holes are sometimes barely or unevenly pre-drilled, so the dowels do not fit securely or screws have to be driven in with great effort. This can lead to material damage.
Another point is aligning the shelves. Since the support strips often rest on only a few screws, there is some play, which can cause the shelves to creak or slip under load.
I wonder about you: Have you already encountered specific problems, or do you want to prepare proactively? Do you know whether you will be using tools like a cordless drill or special drill bits?

Hello Tauus,
I completely understand your concerns. Itâs really helpful to think about potential pitfalls in advance.
When I assembled my first BILLY shelves, I mainly had issues with the stability of the back panel. If itâs not properly inserted and secured, the shelf quickly loses its firmness. Also, be careful not to overload the shelves before the unit is fully assembled â this often causes warping.
Another tip: be patient when screwing parts together! Some screws need to be turned in very carefully; otherwise, the material can be easily damaged.
Donât stress too much, with a bit of care it usually turns out well :-)

The instructions often do not match the parts.I would like to add that, besides the unclear drawings, some of the drill holesâespecially on the side panelsâare slightly misaligned. This becomes a particular challenge when fitting the side walls together with the shelf board. It may be necessary to make minor adjustments to the panels or use tools like a rubber mallet to connect the parts precisely.
The screws themselves are often rather short, which can become an issue with frequent assembly and disassembly. I recommend having at least one longer Allen wrench on hand, as the included T-shaped screwdrivers tend to wear out quickly.
Iâm also interested, Tauus: do you use only the supplied tools for assembly, or do you plan to use your own tools? That can make the process much easier.
I can understand that assembling BILLY can sometimes be frustrating, especially when you are starting such a project for the first time. I felt the same way when I built my first shelf, and I was particularly concerned about the small details, like whether all the screws were properly tightened or if the shelf was really stable.
Itâs important to know that you are not alone and that many people experience similar challenges. My advice: take your time, pause to breathe now and then, and make notes on which steps went well and which didnât. This way, you can avoid turning the whole process into a stressful experience. 🙂
