Hello everyone,

While assembling the Billy bookshelf, I often wondered what the most common issues are that people encounter during self-assembly. I’m particularly interested in the hidden challenges that aren’t immediately obvious but can cause a lot of trouble later on. Are there typical mistakes many make, for example with the screws, the fit of the parts, or possibly the instructions?

I want to be well prepared for my next BILLY assembly and avoid any surprises. It would be great if you could share your experiences and especially any specific difficulties you faced, so that others can anticipate them.

Hey everyone 🙂

I think assembling the BILLY also has something calming about it – if you don’t rush and just stay relaxed, it usually goes pretty smoothly.

Of course, there are small quirks, like sometimes the dowels don’t fit perfectly or a screw can be a bit stubborn, but that’s part of it and adds to the DIY charm 🙂

Tip: Grab some coffee and play some good music while you work, then it just flows better and you get less frustrated 😉

In addition to the unclear drawings, some drill holes, especially on the side panels, are slightly offset.

That’s an important point! It can be really frustrating when you have to make small adjustments to a part just to get a proper fit. Maybe you could also share some tips on how to handle variations in material tension? Sometimes it’s caused by engineered wood panels expanding or contracting slightly due to changes in moisture.

Additionally, there are foam underlays available on the market for floor decoupling, which can help stabilize the entire shelving unit if you experience slight wobbling.

Can you estimate how much practice it takes to position the screw holes accurately enough to keep the effort minimal?

For one of the BILLY assemblies I did, leveling the shelves was particularly tricky.

A small tip from me: Proper alignment and evenly tightening the screws helps prevent any tilting. A spirit level can also be invaluable, especially if you have a flat surface for the shelf to stand on.

And yes, I admit a bit of humor and patience are essential when assembling furniture, otherwise it gets stressful 😉

Oh wow, I love the BILLY shelf! 🙂 Sure, assembling it can be a bit annoying sometimes, but hey, haven’t we all screwed a screw the wrong way or put a wooden part on backwards at some point? That’s just part of the process! 😉

Once you get into it and know the steps, it goes really quickly. And then the feeling of seeing your own piece of furniture standing there – that’s simply amazing!

So, keep your spirits up and get those screws in – you’ll manage it! 🙂
