Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookshelf and want to assemble it myself. Since I want to approach the project as efficiently and carefully as possible, I’m wondering: Which tools are especially recommended for assembling Billy bookshelves and why? Are there any specific tools that make the assembly significantly easier or faster? I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences, especially regarding the tools you actually used and found particularly helpful.
I can easily understand the concerns about choosing the right tools, especially when you want to assemble the Billy shelf without causing any damage. To protect the wood, I like to place a soft blanket or an old wool blanket on the floor so the panels don’t get scratched during assembly. This also helps when pressing or rubbing parts together.

In other words, should the panels always be well supported to prevent unwanted pressure marks or cracks?
I know that feeling well – you want to do everything right and have respect for your cherished furniture. Yes, stabilizing is important, especially when you’re tightening screws to distribute the pressure. I’ve always found it helpful to work on the parts on a table with a non-slip mat underneath; this reduces pressure and prevents slipping. If anything feels uncertain while screwing, it’s better to check more often and work carefully. This way, you avoid unpleasant surprises.

a small hex key can sometimes be useful[...] Better check that in advanceGood point, thanks! The supplied screws are all Phillips head in my case, only the wall plugs are a bit unusual. Do I need to consider anything special regarding the tools for them?
Dowels are usually made of wood and require no tools, just some pressure to insert them – typically, they are gently tapped in with a rubber mallet. It is important to align them carefully; otherwise, the screw may not go in properly, or the part won’t fit correctly. Don’t worry, it’s not complicated, but a bit of patience does help.
