Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion on the topic: What are the best DIY solutions for expanding my IKEA Pax storage or creating additional storage space inside it? I already have a basic model but find that the space is not quite enough, and I would like to know which extensions or modifications you have had good experiences with. I am mainly interested in practical, easy-to-implement ideas that add extra compartments, drawers, or other clever solutions—preferably without having to buy entirely new furniture. How have you customized or enhanced your Pax? Do you have tips for optimal use of the interior space or for exterior cladding to create extra storage or organization? I look forward to your contributions and advice!

custom-built intermediate shelves and the installation of wooden plank shelves at various heights

Thanks for the tip! How did you fix the wooden planks? Just resting on supports or screwed in? Did you use special anchors to ensure stability? I would appreciate a brief explanation of the procedure because I’m still not quite clear on it. It should be sturdy in the end.

I mostly secured the shelves with wooden battens on the sides and back, which I screwed to the inner sides. The shelf boards then rested loosely on these, so you can easily remove them if needed. For especially heavy loads, I also used small metal brackets screwed underneath to prevent any slipping.

Measure first, then screw the battens at the desired height—ideally using at least three points per side. Wooden battens measuring 12x12 mm (about 0.5x0.5 inches) are sufficient, as the boards need to rest firmly on them. For dowel holes, I use standard wooden dowels, which securely hold the wood and prevent warping. Make sure not to place screws too close to the edge. When in doubt, pre-drill holes.

Another tip: You can attach additional flat storage systems to the inside of the doors. For example, wooden panels with narrow shelves or pockets that you sew yourself and then hang up. This creates space for smaller accessories or cosmetics without blocking the main storage area.

Sometimes the inside of the door is also used for mirrors or pinboards, which makes the room more functional.

To truly enhance the functionality of the Pax system, I recommend integrating removable crates or boxes in various sizes. These can be DIY-made from plywood with handle cutouts, for example. It is important to tailor the dimensions precisely to fit the drawer system.

Additionally, magnetic shelves provide an interesting option for quickly repositioning components without the need for screws or dowels. This allows for greater flexibility with changing usage requirements.

magnetic shelves an interesting option

Great idea! Magnetic solutions save time and look cool, really practical for people who like to rearrange often!

I also built small boxes with wheels that can be pulled out – perfect for making better use of storage space underneath. Highly recommend!

I find the exchange here really valuable. Especially when you’re unsure about modifying objects in the Pax system, these experience reports are extremely helpful. It’s important not to be afraid to try things – often you only discover how well you can optimize storage through hands-on experience. And if something doesn’t turn out perfectly, it’s not the end of the world.

If you’re currently doubting whether to proceed: start with small measures like hooks or boxes, then continue step by step.
